who was a better philosopher?

>> No.15252845

>>15252828
One on the left is THE best philosopher.
One on the right is a flat-headed, insipid, nauseating, illiterate charlatan, who reached the pinnacle of audacity in scribbling together and dishing up the craziest mystifying nonsense. This nonsense has been noisily proclaimed as immortal wisdom by mercenary followers and readily accepted as such by all fools, who thus joined into as perfect a chorus of admiration as had ever been heard before. The extensive field of spiritual influence with which Hegel was furnished by those in power has enabled him to achieve the intellectual corruption of a whole generation.

>He scheduled his lectures to coincide with those of the famous philosopher G. W. F. Hegel, whom Schopenhauer described as a "clumsy charlatan". Hegel was also facing political suspicions at the time when many progressive professors were fired, while Schopenhauer carefully mentioned in his application that he had no interest in politics. Despite their differences and the arrogant request to schedule lectures at the same time as his own, Hegel still voted to accept Schopenhauer to the university. However, only five students turned up to Schopenhauer's lectures, and he dropped out of academia.

hegel's philosophy is about contradiction, not synthesis. 'thesis, anti-thesis, synthesis' is a perversion of his philosophy. hegel's point is that contradiction is fundemental.

schopenhauer's philosophy (this is a gross simplification) states that the 'will' is the thing-in-itself, the fundemental aspect of our being. the will=the unconscious, an intractable, contradictory principle that drives human behavior, just like Hegel's 'contradiction.'

which one is better? it's hard to say because they are saying the same thing.

I'm not one to dislike Jung, but as soon as you equate Schopenhauer's will to the unconscious and everything you say that follows that line is plainly stupid. This was not Schopenhauer's philosophy, and you are missing what even makes the will to Schopenhauer the root essence of life in his philosophy. Not even a mention of suffering, and furthermore because of this you not only make the mistake of falsely describing his system, but also of mistakenly using(and in this also misunderstanding) Jung's system. And not to even mention the mistake of "they're the same thing".

You say that like the people who got inspiration from schop, had it from a largely artistic rather than intensive point of view. Einstein? Took him as a method of understanding his own life than for anything analytic. Nietche, the poet? He really didn’t develop much, was just good at stating ideas that were already well developed in a way that people found compelling.

Cause they could never get into him. Schopenhauer is easy to read. Once you read someone you will have a selection bias. I guarantee you that if you make someone read 1 book from an important philosopher, the. Make them only read a Wikipedia article for the rest, surprise surprise they are likely to call the one they read fully the best, and philosophers with vastly different opinions being charlatans.

Same reason why people say nietzche ended philosophy. Because it’s often the first philosopher edgy teens read. (Not that they are necessarily wrong, but wrong for the wrong reasons)

>Schopenhauer is easy to read.

That's a good thing. Of all the German philosophers Schopehauer was by far the one with the best writing skills. Hegel is pathetic in comparison. It's not just a consequence of his methodology. He genuinely wasn't able to write properly in German. You can see from his private letters that even when not writing philosophy he had terrible writing skills. Of course you could say that the skills of Schopenhauer were a bit forced because he purposefully worked on it in order to increase the contrast with Hegel's writing.
