Greek is good, very good. I am learning it myself and have understood a little (two or three sentences) of the famous passages which you've posted.

But this whole "Look, I know Greek!" wave of posters is pure nonsense. Most great authors of the West didn't know Greek; the very vast majority of them, in fact. Reading books in foreign languages is immensely important (though not strictly necessary), but there shouldn't be too much preference for one language over another. Also, a lot of it depends on what you wish to do with it. For a novelist, I suppose Russian and Spanish are vastly more important than Greek.
