I’m reading infinite jest on an e reader with a laptop that has the footnotes on it.

Should I just buy the book or will this system do?

Don't wast your time with this puffed-up, oversaturated, convoluted garbage. Read Shakespeare or someone actually good instead.

Every decent epub has the footnotes hypertexted the hell do you need separate laptop for?

buy the physical copy, get two bookmarks going.

It's honestly not that hard to read once you fall into the rhythm of the text.

agree. first poster wrong, the book's wonderful if you have the time and dedication. most recent poster should probably consider how much fucking time quarantine puts in everyone's hands so of course this is the first book to everyone's minds

The footnotes are supposed to serve as comercials for the main scenes and as a game of tennis, in which you are the ball, going back and forth in the field that is the book. Now that you know this, you can keep using the e-reader + laptop combo.
