450 pages into Against the Day. I think I really like post-Vineland Pynchon a little more than pre-Vineland Pynchon. He's still touching on a lot of the post-modern suspicion of grand narratives, but he really develops the characters far more than his first few books. There's an air of humanity to everyone in this book, from Dahlia's desire to reconcile her relationships with her mother and father to the Traverse family's different ways of dealing with grief.

It also deals a lot with anarchism, the underbelly of capitalism, and excess in life.
