When does this pick up? I'm 150 pages in and so far it's just disconnected ramblings. I'm enjoying it, it's entertaining but plot wise there's absolutely nothing happening.

DFW said the plot is implied, meant to be put together as an exercise for the reader. Also by about page 200 enough of them are connected to the point where you're following a clear narrative

No matter how much effort I make toI have never been able to get more than 50 pages into "Infinite Jest." He was a much better short story writer than a novelist. The title story in the collection "A Supposedly Fun Thing....." is genuinely good.
Usually when people talk to me aboout this book in particular and then you try asking them about.....Tolstoy or Dostoevsky or even.....Flaubert or Melville, almost without exception they haven't read any of the above.
Wallace was a very good short story writer. His novels are....competent. And yes, he lived a tragic life and his suicide was very sad.
Now having said that, before you spend time plowing throw a mediocre novel that no one will remember in 50 years, you're time would be much better spent reading "the classics" rather than wasting your time and energy on such a book.
Until you have read..... "War and Peace," put
"Infinite Jest" to the back of your bookshelf.

It comes together but the resolution happens "off-screen", between the end of the book and the very first chapter, its left to the reader to determine how Hal gets from A to B. The parts about Randy Lenz are the best parts of the book.

It is an essay collection, though the first story was titled "A supposedly fun thing..." and was serialized in...Harper's I think. the one from Harper's was about his time on a cruise ship. The book has more incidents of that type like....his visit to a county fair with a childhood female friend.
Had he not killed himself, I doubt he'd still be getting contracts as supposedly some girl took out a restraining order against him for following her/contacting her too much.

For me, it's a sign that I'm thinking and giving examples rather than stating concrete, definite facts. Or maybe it has to do with my job being a screenwriter (yes, I have written films you and and everyone else reading this has seen; no I can't say what they are, even though I know people will assume I'm full of shit).
I've already had two projects postponed and possibly going straight to the new Apple Streaming Service rather than to theaters, and I'm trapped in my apartment in NYC but too shell-shocked to write. As of now, so I'm just seeking out random people to bullshit with anonymously.

You’re either trolling of completely truthful because you write like a disconnected journalist who sniffs his own farts. If you are telling the truth you should put an Easter egg into your next script, maybe have an actor call something based

>Nice LARP
lmao, indeed. I've actually tried to communicate with the idiots on /tv/ and posted screeners, even a pic of my Oscar, and that was "fake and gay." Which I actually don't mind since no matter what you do, even if 95% of people loved your film, people here are:
A." your film sucked! Why didn't you put in x, y, z!" B. "You're a LARP!" So you can't really win.
Which is actually OK. Especially now, given that the world is ending. BUT, I must say, this "lockdown" business has been fucking amazing for my royalties on my two most recent films so it has worked out pretty well for me.

>> No.15175800

>>15175725
>you should put an Easter egg into your next script,
I could try, but I didn't say I direct (I don't) so that's very rarely my call, even though I'm on set for most of my films.
I do get a good laugh at some of the people who think Hollywood is somehow directly in league with the CIA, which I've even heard Alex Jones claim when I have time to listen to him.
Having said that, you can suggest an Easter Egg and I'll do my best. I also have a lot of great stories about Harvey Weinstein I could tell, though it all seems a moot point now. He was never an EP on one of my films, but after he and his brother sold Miramax and became Weinstein Co. , he came close to distributing one.

Wanna how I know you're full of shit? Writers have no say in production. My friend's a keygrip and has had me on sets before. Writers have absolutely nothing to do with distribution or production. You have absolutely no say, you're not involved with the process at all. Stop larping for yous. I know you're bored at home during quarantine but please read a book or something productive.

>If I get dubs you have to adapt IJ
If only the process where that easy. Let me give you an example-- a friend and I wrote a screenplay about the life of Oriana Fallaci (look her up if you don't know her), one of the very, very VERY few examples of a "brave" female journalist to the point where she took 3 AK-47 bullets in Mexico.
She was not only "brave" in the sense that she would go anywhere and interview anyone even after getting shot, but she was not afraid to speak her mind, whatever the price. And,, while she was alive, she had very strong opinions about the presence of muslims in Europe. Let's just leave it at that.
So we have this great script (execs at 3 different studios like it) even have a A-list actress lined up who would do it, and guess what? NO ONE wants to take the risk with the financing. Beyond the financing, what if, in the course of the movie, her criticism of muslims caused one of the little fuckers to act out? So, no one wants to touch it.
That's just one example of my personal favorite script I've written, but even with my supposed success and how much my films have earned for studios, you always end up starting with zero again and "how much can this earn for us, will it cause too much controversy?

lmao, what a fucking asshole. "my friend's cousin a keygrip..." Is this the point where I'm meant to get very angry and then post pictures of sets? Or my video from my phone of john williams scoring something I wrote while in post?
You're right, it's all a big, giant LARP. Maybe if I work REALLY hard, someday I can be a grip like your friend's father's cousin. Dare to dream, maybe one day....

You can think anything you want friend. since I wrote it with someone else and since it is technically "in development, can't a part of the script. I have pictures from my sets, but then that's too obvious. If I post screeners, then it's "oh, you could have gotten that anywhere."
Let me see if II have a pass from something I didn't actually work on....

Friend, if I were bragging, I would not be be doing it anonymously here, I could go to one of those shit sites and use my actual name "Ask Me Anything! :O] "
I prefer this site since I've been frequenting it for ~13 years and I imagine somewhere out there is someone like me and that it's good for him to know that if you work hard enough at the craft, you don't need connections, money, or anything else save the ability to write a good script. If I were "bragging," I'd try to call my publicist and see if I could get my picture on TMZ "delivering masks" in NYC to health works.
People may think I'm a piece of shit for a variety og reasons, but never been called a "braggart" before. Simply going stir crazy, finished watching both seasons of "my brilliant friend" on HBO, for some reason I can't get my x-box to work so I can play "Witcher 3" or "skyrim" again, and thus here I am.
My....f--king computer isn't working and since I haven't used my Steam account in over a year, I'm terrified when I manage to get it up, it's not going to work.....

why do I care? interesting question, bc I should not. I've been working so hard and consistently for about a decade now, have never had time to catch my breath. And then I woke up to both x-box and the computer I have "Steam" on not working, neither of which I've used in years.
The idea was to show people that you can be a catholic from nowhere with no "connections" and start out with no money and, if your writing is good enough, you can indeed "make it."
In any event, I'm now forced to concuur with others-- it WAS a stupid fucking idea, and going to get back to trying to fix my xbox so I can play COD:MW for the first time in....about a decade, and play disaster of screen rather than allowing it to give me heart palpations.
If nothing else, everyone at home watching movies is good for my royalties. So, you're right, off to try to fix my "Steam" and see what's wrong with my xbox....

yep, I'm a talentless hack right up there with DiCpario, Scorcese, and a bunch of others currently jumping ship to Apple+ because, quite simply, they have the money and managed to outbid Netflix, Hulu, HBO plus, and all the others.
Every major studio is losing tens of millions dollars a day, and still no definite date on when movie theaters will open. IT could be 2 years. So, yes, I will gladly take my "talentless hack" ass and do a project for apple where I can be sure it at least won't be playing to empty theaters.
