She's not a demon, in fact she kills demons. There are multiple theological explanations for why she (and other gods) are depicted as fearsome: one of them is that it's a way of encouraging the devotee to put off physical appearances in order to access the god's transcendent and benevolent nature. Appearing as something docile and pretty would be too easy.
