I’d this better than buying his works individually, I wish to begin to understand philosophy and heard the Greeks are a good place to start

I wonder the same thing. Buying this one is expensive. But where do I begin with plato? Socrates apology and then straight to the republic? what supplementary texts are good?

Reading them in the order listed in the table of contents is fine.

The Great Books of the Western World series has all the Socratic dialogues split into two books.

>> No.15151546

Yeah. just get that to begin with until you take the ancient Greek pill. Stanley Rosen has a couple commentaries on the republic and the symposium that I found helpful. Leo Strauss has a large amount of work on plato.

Apology, Euthyphro, Gorgias, Meno, Phaedo, and then the Republic is a decent order for a general sense of Plato.

>> No.15152240

Plato was a fucking dipshit, don’t bother.

I'm reading 'mythology' (hamilton) right now, plan to read 'Ancient Greece' (Thomas Martin), then the illiad, then the oddysey then Plato's "shit". sounds like a good plan?

I would say yes. It was only about twice the price of Republic to get the whole thing.

Its a very fine book, like owning a Bible or the complete shakespeare

Buying them individually is more comfortable than dealing with such a big volume.
>>15152201
This anon is correct, but I'd include Crito after Apology.

I read that big volume includes some nice comments and explenations

You'll get a more detailed explanation and commentary from individual volumes. The Hackett edition is fantastic as a reference work, but for close study it's less than ideal. However, if you want the best bang for your buck then go for it.

read the republic first and let yourself be confused. Then read the rest of his works and gradually reconstruct the republic

Yes, this is a good volume. Translations are decent, and the intros are good at putting each dialogue into context.

>>15151159
It's $50 for *the* foundational work of all western philosophy. That is a bargain.

That volume is great don't listen to the haters. Read whatever you're interested in. The book will mention other things, and you can and should read other things to help you understand different dialogues and what the fuck is going on.
