Awesome. I try to avoid reading on a screen, it just doesn't work for me the way paper does. Check out Impossible Exchange and Transparency of Evil, those are my favorites you don't have. I figure once I get all his published works the automatic writing of the world will be complete.

>> No.15121806

>>15121754
Honestly? I feel like it probably just doesn't translate. My mother got it for me this christmas so I'm glad I didn't spend any money on it because it's very cryptic. It's basically just a collection of all the stuff he wrote down that wouldn't fit into any other collection of his work because it's too short, like one or two sentences short. Stuff like notes written on a napkin or in the margin of a book.
I'll give a few examples
pg. 28:
Once we have taken evil into ourselves, it no longer insists that we believe in it.
pg. 35:
There is no possessing, only an existing, only an existing that yearns for its final breath, for asphyxiation.
pg. 44:
You have girded your loins in a most laughable way for this world.

It's not *bad* but I'm not sure it's worth the money IMO. If you're really curious about the author I would say it is worth it but you're basically paying for all of his looseleaf notes, the kinda stuff you have written down in your notes app or on sticky notes laying around. He definitely has stronger stuff

>No Mirror of Production or Symbolic Exchange and Death

Symbolic's at my brother's place. I didn't like MoP, I get that it's his break with Marxism, but even then his thought still had yet to break fully from his influences at the time. That's my issue with his earlier work, it's part Baudrillard part post-structuralism. I like his full-Baudrillard works over any other philosopher.

I kind of prefer pynchon. I find delillo characters to be more mouthpieces for delillo. Don't get me wrong, I love delillo, hence why I have the stack, but I find him to have more insights into the state of America than believable characters (save for Libra - that shit's brilliant). Pynchon is wacky yeah, but Mason and Dixon has tons of pathos to it. Even inherent vice and bleeding edge have more developed characters. Most of his work, with the exception of The Unconsoled, is approachable. I would start with Remains of the Day (honestly a perfect short novel) or Artist of the Floating World (similar themes as Remains, slightly more subtle, but also less self-assured).

The Unconsoled, IMO, is the best book that's been published in the last 30 years by any author, but it takes a good deal more effort than the rest of his work (though it's also not as difficult as a number of other things often posted on /lit/ like Joyce or Faulkner or Pynchon).

"Alberto Laiseca is the buried giant of world literature. Without his wild imagination, which surpasses even the most baroque and audacious exploits of the Latin American Boom, the literary jigsaw of the 20th century would be deplorably incomplete. The fact that he is virtually non-existent for English language readers is one of the most flagrant injustices that could ever have been inflicted on them. We are so much the poorer for this gaping absence. I cherish a vague hope that my review of his magnum opus will generate enough buzz to provoke at least a slight interest in this writer among publishers of literature in translation."

>With more than 1300 pages, this is the longest Argentine novel ever written, and since it hasn’t been translated into any language yet, this might be the most notorious obscure novel of whose existence very few readers outside the Spanish language are aware. Which is not to say that the novel is that famous in the Spanish-speaking world either. The Sorias had a long and tortuous journey to its reader. It took Laiseca 10 years to write it, and 16 more to publish. There have been three editions of the novel so far with the total print run amounting to a measly 2,850 copies. The Sorias is a cult classic par excellence, read only by a small cenacle of the initiated, but much talked about amongst those exposed to its mythos. Many are now ardently seeking an opportunity to get hold of it, which might be a tall order not only because of the small number of the copies available on the market, but also due to the forbidding price. One of the earliest champions of the novel was the living classic of Argentine literature Ricardo Piglia, who famously said:”The Sorias is the best novel that has been written in Argentina since The Seven Madmen“.

Damn, Laiseca is BASED.

I need some Sorias action.

I was thinking about this the other day. I caught myself daydreaming about translating the Blind Owl to my native language when I found out that apparently it doesn't have a version in portuguese. But then I got demotivated because it would be a "translation of the translation" since I don't know persian. What do you guys think? Ezra Pound also didn't know chinese, is it "transcreation" a thing worth doing/a valid concept?

LOA's whole thing is that they produce excellent editions for a modest price. They're a nonprofit. I've found that as long as the book isn't too long, the paperback LOA's have the best quality:price ratio, but for the mega omnibus volumes you should really spring for hardcover. I just love their typography and design; it's always a comfy read.

(On the other hand, I never buy novels in collected editions because it's such a waste to carry around four novels while you're just reading one of them. Why not get the four separately?)

I probably wouldn't do a very good job of assessing the difficulty because it's my first language, didn't find it too difficult though, the prose isn't super complicated or anything
B2 is pretty good though, isn't it? If you can't find any passages online I can take a photograph of some page if you want
Between The Hobbit and BotnS I would put this at a comfortable The Secret History

The most challenging thing about it would probably be the parts where people speak in dialect, it doesn't happen too often, really, but every now and again some minor character will pop up and go a little deep
Language is an interesting aspect of the book, beyond the working class dialect the older generations use a little French and a lot of side characters are given some pronunciation quirk
Which is why I was wondering if they have the Bavarians speak with an Irish accent in the translation
