It's possible to die from extreme sadness. If anything, modern science has shown that the emotions we feel have direct physiological equivalent. Depression for example increases the risk of heart failure.

The Liebestod is the epitome of literature. Othello, Romeo & Juliet, Werther, Anna Karenina, etc. There is nothing wrong with it. The fact that it goes against biology simply shows how the aesthetic and empirical world are different. Milton is incorrect on numerous accounts but that doesn't stop his epic from being phenomenal.

Also, to show it's not a modern thing, you have the likes of Antigone who die for love in Ancient Greek and Dido in Latin.

Attempting to hang on to your culture which you know is doomed, all while sitting dirt-poor in some shithole as the opportunities of “real civilization” beckon.
You see the same thing with a lot of other NA groups, I feel bad for the ones who don’t want to assimilate into the people who wiped them out in the first place, yet you’re basically a living tourist attraction if you stay. No wonder they’re all suicidal alkies.
