I always heard that this was because hands are hard to paint, so if you had your hand obscured your portrait would be cheaper/look better. both hands in your pockets looks kinda like giving up so sticking your hand in your shirt is a good way to maintain a look of authority while covering your hand. I assume that the people in photos are doing this to resemble the great men in the paintings that do it

Generally considered to have begun in the Dutch Golden Age before Freemasonry was a thing. Adam Smith wasn't a mason either if you want to point to him.

Fucking King Louis XVI himself and plenty of the nobility were masons. I don't think they were actively plotting their own death and destruction. Also Voltaire is the only prominent French Enlightenment philosopher in masonry. Rousseau, Diderot, and other famous names weren't.
