I’m more interested in so-called “mystical experiences” than I am in philosophizing, I’ve realized, and my interest in majoring in philosophy was a misguided attempt to further study and deepen my understanding of “mysticism”, intuitive/ecstatic/Supra-rational ways of knowing, etc. I find this thread of mysticism used to be an accepted part of Western philosophy (with thinkers like Heraclitus, Parmenides, Plato at times, Plotinus, as well as the Hermetic writings and Greek mystery schools, which at times are more “mysticism” than they are “philosophy”). In modern Western philosophy, though, mysticism and esotericism are seen as trends to be suspicious of, or, at best, to rationally dissect and analyze. Academia would probably see me as being stuck in the past or even delusional for thinking that there were ancient sources and schools of wisdom actually more wise than we are today, and for wanting to study the Presocratics et al more in-depth instead of focusing on Foucault, Derrida etc.

Since we’re here on /lit/ I also feel compelled to point out I’m NOT a Guenonian/Traditionalist, although I also have some knowledge of and interest in Hindu schools of thought and Sufi writings and philosophy (from the works of Rumi and Attar to more modern ones).

I’ve experimented with psychedelics (although I was interested in mysticism long before I did). I find them overrated at triggering “spiritual experiences,” unless perhaps you take a lot of a naturally occurring hallucinogen. And there is the high probability hallucinogens were used in the Eleusinian Mysteries, as well as the discussion of “soma” in Vedic literature. I’m not discounting drugs, but I think there are safer, more reliable ways to reach altered states of consciousness.

I get what you mean, though. After a certain point, your own direct experience and contemplation is worth more than all the books you read, although books are a nice addition.

The problem here is that clinical studies and trials around chemical interventions are so expensive it's hard to go into. The other thing that comes to mind, and that you might like more, is the idea around machine learning models and where they "hallucinate" as that is like a kind of nascent mysticism, there's some work being done to relate certain machine learning models and neurological concepts/disorders that's quite interesting. It's also common in these areas to get into these philosophical swamps where you're like "what is knowledge?" when you're trying to work out what you're really doing with a model. Having someone with an interest in this stuff can be really good in the right team (finding the right team would be hard).

Yeah. I like what researchers are doing like John Hopkins University where they’re used stuff like psilocybin and MDMA in experimental therapies, but, as you say, it’s hard to get into, and they ironically probably want the exact opposite of some hippie talking about its spiritual implications. Their shtick is more along the lines of, “What chemical changes does the drug make in the brain, how/why do they sometimes have long-lasting antidepressant effects, etc.”

This does indeed sound interesting. I believe in some form of vitalism since consciousness doesn’t seem to be totally reducible to physical hardware, though, so I’m half-skeptical of how advanced artificial intelligence can get, but I do believe it’s a huge growing field and might lead to one of the next technological revolutions of humanity. And yeah, the huge potentials of human consciousness do seem to be linked to this same capability to “hallucinate” that you speak of, have neurological disorders, etc. A person can suffer from schizophrenia or be deliberately irrational (poetic, artistic, etc), a computer can’t, but ironically this same capacity for irrationality is what makes humans more intelligent, creative, and unpredictable, it seems.
