Writers have some of the most inflated senses of self worth or at least overly poetic self images out of any profession. The idea that writing is this gargantuan sacrifice made by the author because they just had to tell thier story is an extension of that

As a writer I can confirm this. Most of what drives me is the desire to be thought of as this great cultural icon. I think most people don’t realise how dull the writing process is. In many aspects it’s similar to menial labour.

>Depression upon depression is pointless

What the fuck are you going on about? Depression is a self-sustaining thing. An increase in magnitude and feeling is inherent in the illness. Stop with this "you do it to yourself" crap, you idiot. It's completely apparent to anyone with half a brain that you're merely angry at yourself here, that your delusion is so strong that you've shed any of these "teenage" notions of sincerity, and now you've just become an unfeeling husk that gets its kicks from posting under a trip on 4chan of all places.. and the twisted thing is that you've become so detached, that you think it's "progress" while telling others who are feeling something to "get over it."

You truly sicken me.

Troll. Expressing excessive amounts of grief to the point of hysterics (is often something men accuse women of doing) is self defeating and wasteful, no matter how long your lifespan is, and I suggest to an ugly grey pallet named “anonymous” anonymous n a sometimes gruff manner, because you are always abusive to me. So my prickliness hides a rather soft heart that DOESN’T want you to suffer. Do not wallow in your grief for long, it’s initial catharsis wears thin and can kill. I know the feelings well having lived a life.

You fuck off and have nice day now.

I suppose all acts of giving (even merely wanting to give) are, in a sense. Perhaps though one's all the better for it, I don't know..
Wanting to be of use is perhaps a major drive that's rarely spoken about in a (soft) scientific way but certainly capitalized upon out here in the West where myriads upon myriads trade their hours for junk food, cheap car and a shack

Let's take this a step further.

>One of the most startling paradoxes inherent in writing is its close association with death. This association is suggested in Plato's charge that writing is inhuman, thing-like, and that it destroys memory. It is also abundantly evident in countless references to writing (and/ or print) traceable in printed dictionaries of quotations, from 2 Corinthi-ans 3:6, 'The letter kills but the spirit gives life' and Horace's reference to his three books of Odes as a 'monument' (Odes iii. 30. 1), presaging his own death, on to and beyond Henry Vaughan's assurance to Sir Tho-mas Bodley that in the Bodleian Library at Oxford 'every book is thy epitaph'. In Pippa Passes, Robert Browning calls attention to the still widespread practice of pressing living flowers to death between the pages of printed books, 'faded yellow blossoms/ twixt page and page'. The dead flower, once alive, is the psychic equivalent of the verbal text. The paradox lies in the fact that the deadness of the text, its removal from the li'ing human lifeworld, its rigid visual fixity, assures its endurance and its potential for being resurrected into limitless living contexts by a potentially infinite number of living readers (Ong 1977, pp. 230-71)

Posted this yesterday but in a context where the Milton tag did not figure; ironic in this context I guess given that it's taken From the Life of, etc.
I've thought of this before but in slightly different terms, about how it may behoove a poet who intends 'to live' to write from the perspective of being dead already; in fact it makes 'perfect' sense because the overwhelming majority of one's readership will be active after one's own demise, and thereby this 'angle' (if rendered effectively, and it can be, there are tricks) will lend one's voice a perverse authenticity to one's living readers because they'll know youre dead when reading you even if this fact remains submerged. I could go into more detail about how and why it's done but I'll let the matter rest here because I find it an interesting topic and may write about it some day. --But consider Charles Dickens in Mutual Friend and xmas Carol, and Emily Dickinson in her poetry from 1860 on- both were aware of this method or way of composition.
