Is a Christian allowed to kill someone in self defense?

>> No.15067581

Yes, and self defense can also mean preemptive attack against unsuspecting heretics

What kind of a question is that? Why wouldn’t they be allowed to kill in self defence? I’m not a Christian but I don’t see how this is some kind of moral dilemma for them, I don’t understand where you got this idea from.

Yes. Much has already been written on the theological acceptance, and even encouragement, of self defense within the Christian tradition, as well as the ability for Christians to take up arms in service of their nation (see Augustine, Luther if protestant, etc). What applies to the average citizen Christian, however, is not necessarily what applies to priests and monastic orders. There is certainly a level of faith and spiritual practice in which total humility, even to the point of death, is an imperative.

Sigh. You'll never convince him of anything, then. At least have him read 1 Samuel 17:41-54, in which David says that it is the Lord who saves, not the spear or sword, but then proceeds to BTFO Goliath with a rock, cut his head off with a sword, and parade it in front of the enemy army. God protects, and he uses our hands and tools in them to do it on occasion.

It is clear, but your eyes are clearly not. The injunction is to "not murder," in other words to not kill in a way that would cause bloodguilt. Turn the other cheek refers to instances of wounded pride. Obviously it doesn't say that "if someone cuts off your right hand, offer him your left," for that would be intent to kill. The point is that, if someone calls you a bad name or "slaps your cheek" (an offense to one's pride), you ought to transcend above petty reciprocity.

>"This life is nothing."
From a Christian perspective, what you do here has eternal ripples, but no, life here matters far less than eternal life (Heaven), and far more than eternal death (Hell).

If the state is acting in an ungodly manner and waging ungodly wars, then I'd say you're not vindicated in killing the state's opponent. If the opponent is a foreign invader or ungodly, then you are permitted to attack him.

If it is wrong to kill even in self defense, then logically a Christian has to be an anarchist. A state derives its power through physical force. The government has power because they can use violence against you have they have to. So if you support the government you support violence. Therefore, it follows that a Christian must be an anarchist.

But didn't Jesus also say something like "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's" meaning pay your taxes, which means support the government? So which is it?

It is in moments like these when you realize that the popular religions are merely glorified and deified political systems. This would be, for instance, to prevent infighting in the civilization upheld by residual ressentiment from mudering and war.

>[P]icture the scenario with yourself as the oppressor. You are a wealthy, powerful person whose slave has displeased you in some way. You reprimand your slave with a backhanded slap. The response you expect is the response you have always received from your slaves – the response you yourself would give if someone higher than you treated you the same way. You expect your slave to cower, submit, and slink away. Instead, your slave defiantly turns their other cheek and challenges you to hit them again. What can you do?

>You would like to give your slave another backhanded slap to show them their place, but to do that you would have to use your left hand which would admit that your action is unclean. You could hit them on their left cheek, instead, but it would be embarrassing to hit your slave the way you should hit your equal. You’re confused. You don’t know what to do. Flustered, you could order the slave be flogged, but the slave has already made their point. They have shown you that they are a human person with dignity and worth. You don’t own them, you cannot control them, and they do not submit to your rule.
