Comforting little blankets of nothing to fall asleep to. Absolutely zero intellectual merit, and is often quite reductive for the sake of simplicity and clarity of communication, but his voice is gentle and soothing. Its basically consoomer philosophy for the ASMR crowd.

>> No.15047439

No one can understand a philosophy reductively. To read philosophy is an active notion. You must do more than simply process information, but intellectually ascend to the argumentation and mode of thinking. This applies to textbooks that are on the market today, not just youtube cucks.
There are good ways to explain a philosopher in contemporary language, but it's best done by scholars.

I don't expect such short videos to be overly informative or edifying, so there's no point in criticizing the veracity/completeness of the content presented in them.

Hopefully people who watch those videos go on to embark on a serious investigation into the works of the figures he discusses.

If he introduced even one person to Samuel Beckett (I'm pretty sure there's a video on Beckett) and persuaded him to give the trilogy a try, then I really can't complain too much.

>> No.15047465

>>15047448
>I'm pretty sure there's a video on Beckett
There is, but I think it was more focused on his plays than his fiction, which would make sense, given that they are a far more digestible format of his ideas and aesthetic sensibilities. I think the kind of people who watch School of Life videos are unlikely to attempt the sheer autistic slog that is reading the trilogy (though that isn't to say they are bad books in the least)

Perfect example of genetics determining your philosophy. de Botton is the prototypical prematurely bald softboi whose worldview is dominated by failing with women as a young man.

Interestingly he hasn't gone full far-left as so many onions boys in his position have. But the resentment bubbles up in many subtle ways.

> Hegel has had a terrible influence on philosophy. He writes horribly. He is confusing and complicated when he should be clear and direct. He tapped into a weakness of human nature: to be trustful of grave-sounding, incomprehensible prose. He made it seem as if the mark of reading deep thought is that one cannot quite understand what is going on. This has made philosophy much weaker in the world than it should be. And the world has paid another heavy price for Hegel’s problems with communication. It has made it much harder to hear the valuable things he has to say to us.

>> No.15050496

Based channel btfoing pseuds who spend months reading philosophy and not actually understanding it. Ive never even read any philosophy, just watched school of life videos and my philosophy knowledge is already 100x greater than all of yours combined. Of what use is reading philosophy if you cant extract the most essential information from it. Hundreds of pages of mostly irrelevant information, while all I have to do is watch a 10 minute youtube video.
Its understandable that you dislike the channel: its merely the sunk cost fallacy at play.

Their Hegel video missed the point imho.
I guess he was hard to understand with all his dialectics (his logic and his phenomenology are really important when talking about Hegel) so they took his philosophy of history and extracted what they would need to make him easy to understand.
But now people really know nothing about him. The video was no help at all.

Read Watt. It's a good example of his writing style. It's somewhat repetitive because of circumstances surrounding it (his friends in France were getting killed in the War and he wrote it to prevent himself having a breakdown), but it's a good example of his surrealistic story-telling. I also don't believe that Beckett is either plot or character-driven; he's symbol-driven. Whatever the thing of most significance is in terms of how the character appears drives the story.
