It just hit me mid-way through some philosophy reading that there is literally no point to reading philosophy. Why the fuck am I wasting my time reading about what others think?

>> No.15040352

It's good that you've come to this realization early. A lot of people spend most of their lives studying this shit, and when they finally come to the same realization, it's already too late.
Read some philosophy of others to get the flavour and for the ability to namedrop to get some pussy, and focus on empirically experiencing what life has to offer. For that is the only way to wisdom.

Intellectual cleanliness is not an inborn trait. It is learned. They are better thinkers than you are, because they have read more than you have.

Then read Roger Bacon.

The idea of throwing away everything that is popular within a nerdy subculture is always attractive to angry nerds, or angry former nerds, who want to embody all that the other people in these other nerds lives have shit on them for, just to tangentially feel cool.

But lets be honest, if you read Roger Bacon you'd realize you're making some major cardinal error here. You shouldn't even be close to thinking about throwing away the entirety of philosophy, because that mentality, that attitude is not a new one. It has existed since the dawn of man. The ancient sophists were not masters in philosophy, at least not the kind Plato or Aristotle knew of, they shunned that and stuck with their 'science' of analyzing the world. Obviously, they were wrong. Much like how Roger Bacon says many of the religious during his time were wrong not to study philosophy like Aristotle.

Throughout the ages, the more important parts of philosophy get glossed over and forgotten, and no one is around to help people see that it shouldn't be. I see this mentality on 4chan of all places, where everyone wants to read and discuss Nietzsche or Marx, but not enough want to discuss Aristotle's Topics or Euclid's Elements. It's a dime in a dozen.

If you want to succeed in this world, I am telling you: stop associating yourself with a clique or culture, you are not part of one, and you shouldn't want to be. This life is more enjoyable when you are someone unique anyway, someone whom others respect for their pursuance of knowledge and truth.

To think critically about the life you live. To articulate your thoughts against others in such a way that the message is understood on their level. To provide enjoyment in mental exercise.

You can't be a good thinker if you don't read because our standard of "good thinking" has increased as more has been written over time. Reading a lot isn't all it takes, but it's still a prerequisite. Imagine trusting anyone's views on philosophy, art, political theory, or the sciences if they haven't actually read the masters of their fields.

I think it's not how much you read that matters, but the kinds of books you read. Reading maths will probably make you a better thinker.
Reading Hegel, Lacan, Freud will make you stupid. That said, I still think most of the ability to think clearly is innate and does't come from reading.

If yer talking Continental then I can agree for the most part, even history as a subject of study should be taken with a grain of salt for the existence of omissum ex historiae policies in society throughout all of history, and history itself is maybe the most legitimate aspect of Continental philosophy, which can largely be said to be driven by confirmation bias and thus is often nothing more than self-aggrandizing ministrations.

If yer talking Analytical then in that case I strongly disagree, it's important to introduce oneself with self-propagating fundaments if these adhere to the latuswork of comprehending the relativisms and inherent congruencies of an existence expressing itself through consistent physical properties.

Analytical philosophy > Continental philosophy (as if that should ever be up for debate)

Just my two cents

Yup, you got it. Generally it's a huge waste of time because you need to find your own way. You have to ask yourself, why are you reading philosophy? If you haven't already found your own path, then there is very little you will be able to get out of reading philosophy. If you already have found your own path, and you have some VERY specific questions, then perhaps you can benefit from reading philosophy. But most people read philosophy because they want to find meaning, purpose, "spirituality", which you won't find from philosophy at all. And if you THINK you found this from reading philosophy... I got bad news for you...

I am not experienced in reading philosophy and have no ambition to become so, but I do feel that reading a bit of philosophy is a good way to create some structure for you to think in. A book like The Nicomachean Ethics really help me think with more structure about my behaviour in social situations, for example, though nothing Aristotle says really is revolutionary.

Philosophy isn't a hobby, it's a science. "Wisdom" has no bearing if you don't mean to apply it to further it. Contemporary debates on correlationism are simultaneously a justification for why philosophy is needed, and also prove yet again how philosophical traditions can skew erroneously against itself.
There is something to gain in reading philosophy casually, as there is in reading biology or astronomy in your spare time, but if you think the exercise of 'self-aggrandizing metaphysical systems' is just a fun exercise, of course it will feel like the aims of philosophy are whimsical and arbitrary.

To digress back to my earlier points, much of the advances made in continental philosophy allowed many social sciences to develop better hermeneutic methods in sociology, history, psychology, anthropology, political science and economics. It is not a wasted exercise, but has real bearing in a way we might take for granted.
