I don't really agree. The modernist and second-wave of modernist writers are all very good (Soseki, Akutagawa, Kawabata, Tanizaki, Izumi Kyoka, Daizai, Oe) and they all have good translations (I like Seidensticker's translations of Kawabata's Meijin and Thousand Cranes in particular).
Going backwards, there's great translations of pre-modern literature as well. It's not hard to find decent translations of noh plays, of haiku poets such as Issa and Basho, the manyoshu, the kokinshu, the Genji, the Heike; and going on the great religious/philosophical writings of Kukai, Ennin, Dogen, Hakuin, Honen, Shinran, Nichiren, and the writers of the Kyoto school.

If you look up the actual events of the Mishima Incident it's more a pathetic comedy of errors than the "he killed himself after failing to start a uprising" narrative you get in western sources.

So first of all the military base was in downtown Tokyo and was full of staff officers and logistics clerks. Most of them probably hadn't fired a rifle since they finished basic training or had been promoted. Not exactly a fine crop of samurai warriors, so to speak.

Anyways, It's the middle of the week, a Thursday IIRC, Mishima gets onto the base by sending a letter to the base commandant that he has a nice sword and would the commandant like to see it? Mishima also had previous interactions with the SDF because he'd joined it for a brief period in 1967 and this was, at the time, seen as being a great recruiting tool for the SDF. So he and his buddies go to meet the general, then while he's admiring the sword one of them comes up behind the general with a tea towel and blindfolds him and they tie him to a chair. The general's aides and some other staff officers notice this is going on and try to rescue him after arming themselves with furniture and riot batons, one of them throws a desk globe at Mishima, Mishima slashes a aide trying to run away from the lunatic with a sword in the back and another staff officer sustains a serious hand injury. After this initial scuffle the officers back off and Mishima demand they assemble the soldiers on the base so that he can give a speech, they do so while waiting for the police to get there.

The soldiers assembling outside are and drawn by a rumor that people have been killed, according to Japanese sources, shouting various things like "is it the red army?" (At the time this would likely be the Japan Revolutionary Communist League and not the later Japanese Red Army/United Red Army) or "Is it Mishima?", eventually Mishima comes out onto a balcony, hangs some banners off it, and starts trying to give his speech about how they need to overthrow the emperor, except he can't because the soldiers keep talking, stuff like "It's Mishima," "Speak up" and "Go away", a sergeant goes up to the balcony and starts yelling at him to "scream properly." Eventually a news helicopter shows up and adds to the noise. Mishima finally asks "who is with me?" and is met with calls of "you're crazy" and so on, he goes back inside. One has to imagine that they were probably pissed off because this happened right before the weekend and figured their leave would get canceled because of the investigation.

The suicides happen as we all know, except do you know why they botched it and had to finish things off with a knife? The sword was a fake, the fucking thing was a mall ninja katana that bent when they hit him in the neck with it. To add to this the general, still tied up in his chair while this is all going on, had been a major in WW2 and witnessed his CO kill himself at the end of it.

Mishima is a POC and his nationalism occurred after his country liberalised which is a mortal sin for people with internationalist intentions as POC nationalism is only meant to occur between the stages of colonialism and liberalisation (recolonisation on ideologically favourable terms).

Mishima is really dull and people read him for his personal mystique/cult of personality.

Akutagawa, Osamu Dazai, and a few others (I cannot recall off the top of my head, haven't been into JPN Lit in over a decade) were far superior writers.

Ding ding ding. The entire crux of the "X is LARP therefore bad" """""""""""""argument"""""""""" is that some given thing doesn't match up perfectly with whatever imagined romantic notions you have about a thing, therefore it HAS to be fake and inauthentic. Do you believe Odin is real, but don't walk around in chainmail wearing handspun flax breeches and a Sutton Hoo helmet with horns? LARPER! I saw what someone who believes Odin is real looks like on TV, and you don't look like it, so you're a LARPer!

It's a more autistic version of people trying to talk like they're in Friends or Seinfield; they believe that the fictionalized display on TV is what authenticity looks like, so when they see something that doesn't match up with it, they think it must be fake. All dialogue is witty and funny and clever and consists entirely of one-liners, zingers, and quips. It's simply inauthentic to communicate otherwise. I know, because I saw it on TV. Only actors can have real lives, after all, so clearly it must be fake.

This is very dated reddit vernacular. You arent even arguing inauthenticity and histrionics arent valid criticisms, but instead that its some sort of spectrum which makes everything sincere. Holding fundementally contradicting principles and displaying a lack of understanding of them is no grounds fo gatekeeping.
