I have a question. I was re-reading the tale of the children of hurin in Tolkien's unfinished tales, and came to this paragraph:

>Then wrath mastered Morgoth, and he said: "Yet I may come at you, and all your accursed house; and you shall be broken on my will, though you were all made of steel." And he took up a long sword that lay there and broke it before the eyes of Húrin, and a splinter wounded **his** face ; but Húrin did not blench.

Now, wether "his" in that sentence refers to Morgoth or to Húrin, is syntactically ambiguous. The next sentence "but Húrin did not blench" makes me think that it's Húrin face the one wounded. But given Tolkien's predilection for prophetic inspiration and foreshadowing, and given this previous lamentation uttered by Húrin when his daughter died:

>But Húrin ... going out he lifted up his hand towards the North, crying: 'Marrer of Middle-earth, **would that I might see thee face to face, and mar thee** as my lord Fingolfin did!

Makes me think that it might(?) be Morgoth's face wich was hurt.

What does anon think?

I think that's an interesting observation. It does sound a lot like Tolkien, but that "but Húrin did not blench." really confuses things for me.

So, that's one for undecided >>14995144
and one for Morgoth >>14995157 ?

Given that the subject of the first sentence is Morgoth, and "he said" "And he took" both refer to Morgoth, I am inclined to think that the "his face" is still referring to Morgoth, since Húrin does not become the new subject until the last part "but Húrin did not blench." where the subject is changed.

>He broke it before the eyes of Hurin whomst face the splinter wounded.
But, those are not the words of the text. Maybe it's what the author meant, but as you can see from other anon's comments, that's arguably not what the author meant.

Maybe it's different on The Lays of Beleriand or on The Children of Hurin, you know he wrote and rewrote those stories like 10 times.

Also what we got to read was filtered by Christopher Tolkien.

It has to be Hurin. Why else would the author mention that he did not blench?

Yes, absolutely. It's the "definitive" edition of The Children of Hurin.

>If so, is that worth getting into?
It's a mixed bag of very interesting things and Christopher's autistic obsession with his father. Some parts of the books 6, 7, 8 and 9 are simply unbearable.

It's full of very minor details about the writing process of TLOTR, it's tiresome to read them all.
