We are like a drop of water that has no awareness of the ocean therefore identifies as a lonely drop of water separate from everything, such is the illusion of duality.
Our purpose is to realize our true nature by removing ego Maya illusion till we merge with the eternal self. To feel the plenitude of the ocean and recognize self in everything.
Only then do we really achieve the highest good.

Brahma-Sutra 2.1.33:

लोकवत्तु, लीलाकैवल्यम् ॥ ३३ ॥
lokavattu, līlākaivalyam || 33 ||
lokavat—As is seen in the world; tu—but; līlākaivalyam—mere pastime.

Śaṅkarācārya commenting on this verse explaining why Brahman creates the world gives the analogy of the King who already has his desires fullfilled engaging in disport in his gardens and fields as an example of how Brahman does so without any extraneous purpose, as a result of Brahman's very nature; although he cautions that this should not be understood as being underdone for any purpose or desire because Brahman is without them and also that nothing is ever actually created but that this ultimately refers to the unreal names and forms conjured up as limiting adjuncts to the Self by Brahman's power of maya. Elsewhere in his Brahma Sutra Bhasya he gives the example of it being comparable to the always-present natural rhythm of breathing. Gaudapada in his Mandukya Karika also says that it is the self-nature or svabhava of Brahman to utilize His power of maya via creation. Brahman abides forever as eternal Bliss and it is His nature to always be wielding His power of maya like it were His disport or pastime while remaining completely unaffected by it. The 13th-century Nath non-dualist Jñāneśvar says Brahman does so for the sake of beauty.

It's never actually separated or divided up though, what we think of as our individual consciousness is just the individual non-conscious intellect (in the subtle body) being illuminated by the light of the eternally conscious undivided Self and in the process seeming to become an individual consciousness itself similar to how a crystal placed next to a red cloth appears to take on the color of the cloth.

Snore. The patrician choice lies with the Lacanian notion of "non-all" multiplicity, or the radical in-compossibility of everything. To know the universe is to radically disenchant with the notion of totality, and instead learn to appreciate radical ontological incompleteness.

The universe is expanding at an incredible rate, anon– is it not entirely plausible that, at some point, galaxies will be separated by such vast, incommensurable distances that eventually it will become impossible to determine whether or not the universe had a singular point of origin, the "oneness" you are so desperately seeking?

How can we be certain that the big crunch theory is true? What if the universe were to continue to perpetually expand until even the molecules which make up our planet, even the very atoms in our body, begin to disintegrate? Where would the "eternal self" be then? Broken up into such small pieces that we could not say they were ever (or ever will be) part of a singular, eternal whole?
