I see pic related posted a lot but I'm apprehensive about getting a novel by a westerner to learn about an eastern religion. Any recommendations on books that give a solid foundation on Buddhism?

that's not a good introduction to buddhism. you could try In the Buddha's Words for a guided tour of the Pali canon

This, Start with 'Introduction to the Study of the Hindu Doctrines' by Rene Guenon (pbuh), it will unironically give you a good understanding of eastern religions in general and a good understanding of what original Buddhism was about (basically a spinoff of Upanishad teachings) before it was all ruined by later no-self autists who mistranslated the Prakrit into Pali and misunderstood what Buddha taught

Just read some of the sutras first, they are short.

The Digha Nikaya is speculated by some to have been for providing converts with a grounding in the teachings. The Vinaya texts have to do with rules for monastic conduct. The meat and potatoes may be found in the Majjhima Nikaya and beyond that some works of the Khuddaka Nikaya.

So many bullshit recommendations here. As you rightly guessed, Siddhartha is a work of fiction, and is more about Hinduism anyway, it won't introduce you to Buddhism.

For absolute beginners, "Understanding Buddhism" by Malcolm David Eckel is a good place to start. For a Theravada perspective you can read "What the Buddha Taught" by Walpole Rahula. For Zen you could read "The Three Pillars of Zen" by Philip Kapleau. "The Foundations of Buddhism" by Rupert Gethin is a more in-depth overview.
