Agreed. His tennis essay in A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again is also great.

Though can someone please tell me if things start to pick up or twist or change at all? Is it just a number of (generally disconnected) vignettes of different storytelling perspectives?

I'm 300 pages in and very close to putting it down for good.

DFW is the only writer I've ever read to write things about sport with literary merit. My favorite parts of IJ are the depictions of the day to day life and rigors of the high performance athlete.
The best part of the book is probably early on when all the older guys are talking to the little buddies and it jumps back and forth between all their conversations.

This. Tennis academy is great but I prefer the stories of pretty much everyone else. Gately was great. Kate, Joelle, etc are much better than the tennis academy stories.
