If it's your first time I'd start with something easier than Infinite Jest

Don't bother.

Read every day. If you aren't feeling it in the beginning, try to read at least 350 pages, that's how long it took me to really get into it. You may want to take notes but I was able to keep a surprising amount of the characters and plot in my head. I usually need to refer to notes for long books but I didn't really need to for Infinite Jest, despite its complexity. The endnotes are fun, people who are annoyed by them are probably looking at them the wrong way. Use two bookmarks if you're reading print.

I'm restarting my read after getting through the first 500 pages a year ago. I'd recommend using the Infinite Summer index to keep track of stuff and read other's thoughts on the narrative as it progresses.

My favorite scene is when the boys are at the table in the cafeteria debating whether they're drinking fresh or powdered milk.

Don't ask the questions:

>What about video games?
>What about the internet?
>What about music?

And you should be fine

>It only "clicked" after 600 pages
The eschaton match is the most overrated scene in the whole novel.

For me it, it clicked when that arab motherfucker watched the tape. The scene itself isn't remarkable, but DFW's description of this milquetoast muslim fundamentalist and his life really turned me onto the book and kept me reading.

Just make sure you take your time with it. I personally really got into it after 1500 pages. Great book and worth your time!
