14889527 No.14889527 [Reply] [Original]

>Trying to get into Kant, buy used copy of Prolegomena
>Book is full of unbelievably shitty commentary and underlining
>Comments include "uhmmm... huh?" and "wow, bitter old man!"
>Giant dog ears throughout, with the final one being on the last page of the book with giant red text written on it: "THE END"
Who the fuck does this? I think I remember more of their shitty commentary than Kant.

Post some examples. Sounds hilarious.

Here is some paraphrasing from memory, since I returned to the reseller on Amazon.
>draws circle around entire page, writes "dunno"
>underlines kant talking about appearances vs things in themself, writes "buddhism would disagree"
>one page is half written over with rambling about alcohol and what looks like song lyrics, with plenty of use of *hicup* as a retarded emote
>when kant was talking about the outer world of senses being in space, they write "what about smell?"

Forget their commentary man. That shouldn’t hold you back but one time I came across a copy of Tristram Shandy and some pages were literally swirled like a kid went through with a pencil. Honestly though my 200+ girlfriend freed my soul after that

>While most Western thinkers decoupled olfaction and taste from the intellect, this segregation is not universal. For example, Kant considered the pleasures of olfaction “fleeting and transitory,” unworthy of cultivation.

Was this Kant's blindspot? Did he have such disdain for the olfactory experience that he overlooked properly developing a metaphysics of smell?

inane commentary from used books is one of my favorite features from them. A copy of Merwin's translation of Gawain I have was obviously taught in some class to an lgbt advocate because whenever there's a hint of brotherly admiration they underline it, put a smiley, and write "gay!!!" also I read a copy of Sapiens from the library that someone had made just outright, incorrect "corrections" of British spellings and other miscomprehensions in pen, if you can imagine.

It's really terrifying seeing sometimes people put
?s around extremely basic vocabulary and I want to retroactively take whatever book it is out of their hands and tell them they weren't ready.

I love it.
>read library version of Hamsun's hunger

I got a used copy of Joyce's Dubliners years ago, was in great condition, nice hardcover, not a mark throughout. Until I got to "The Dead", and the quiet scene between the two of them after the party. Joyce briefly describes his sexual frustration and in the margins I see the first note of the book in pencil:

"YOU HORNY MOTHERFUCKER"

Absolutely based. They lifted their pencil only once the entire book and god damn did they knock it out of the park.

Teaching Kant to the masses is a mistake. They will never appreciate it. Plebs should be limited to contemporary textbooks on critical thinking, ethics, etc.
