this book seems to trigger women and liberals (who don't seem to have read it). does that mean it's good and i should buy it?

because back in the late 90s and 00s it was a very trendy book among literary types, but most hipsters found it very hard to read because they're honestly just lazy retards so they had an inferiority complex about it. Once the culture shifted to it being more acceptable to shit on someone like DFW and his fans for being le white males all these people could finally voice their butthurt about the entire thing.

The combination of resentment for making them feel stupid and contempt against people who are now lower than them on the social totem pole is quite potent.

reading Virgil is likely to make them even angrier, especially if you're reading it in Latin. People who find Infinite fucking Jest a challenge are not going to read the Aeneid

They’re all pissed off (like me) that DFW stole ‘Infinite jest’ from Shakespeare.. hamlet says it’s to Horacio.. I thought it was an original line. Sad.

Because men would say big book big brain big peen, and somehow shallow men doing shallow things negates the worth of it's content, and it became a symbol of the male ego for smart gurls to reflexively roll their eyes at.

>this books seems to trigger women and liberals It used to be one of many props they used to appear cultured and well read. I did speak with an English Literature PhD. the other day, though (who was very lib: picture the typical limp-wristed humanities student with NYT-approved political opinions), and he mentioned that he didn't like the book at all. Have people turned on DFW for his alleged """abuse""" of that woman in the late 90s?

You'll like it if you gel with its sense of humor, because a lot of the time it is a very funny and clever book. The women who crow about how much they hate it haven't read it and never will. DFW's work is certainly an acquired taste but he isn't nearly the chauvinistic white male MFA stereotype that they think he is.

People level about as much vitriolic hate on Jonathan Franzen and I don't really understand it. I mean, I thought The Corrections was pretty good, but Jonathan Franzen is not nearly interesting enough a literary figure to inspire the amount of unbridled rage that I've witnessed. You can't mention him or DFW on twitter at all without being instantaneously scolded by two dozen blue check marks for not reading Toni Morrison instead.

is it not obvious? They are the most recent white male authors that make 'poc' uncomfortable because they dont understand them, and because the very existence of prestigious white male authors is an affront to the current culture.

Name a contemporary white male author that the bluechecks praise. a literary one, not a genre fiction guy

Somehow David Foster Wallace managed to write a book that appealed to softies and “good men” even though he himself was an asshole. Women are pissed and betrayed that a smart, cold man like him would look towards the “sensitive” autists.

>> No.14885767

>Some reckon books by the thickness, as if they were written to try the brawn more than the brain. Extent alone never rises above mediocrity: it is the misfortune of universal geniuses that in attempting to be at home everywhere, are so nowhere.

There's a kind of person that reads this book in college, and they are not the most intelligent, artistic, or interesting. It's the kind of book for someone who thinks "Dune" is deep-- this is their "Gravity's Rainbow." Mildly smelly, probably has a beard but not too long, looks kind of like Nick Kroll or a washed-up male feminist garage band that now trolls twitter.

In college most people don't bat an eye if it's a white male that you're reading. This is just an excuse. The phenotype that this book attracts has always been unattractive to women. It's also a deeply dishonest book by a deeply dishonest person, and there's probably a bit of that with its crowd.

This is an interesting explanation.
>David Foster Wallace managed to write a book that appealed to softies and “good men” even though he himself was an asshole.
I see this a lot. Writers who appeal to the humanity of the audience while themselves having very little of it. It's manipulative as hell. Reminds me of the "those who can't do it themselves teach it" line you often hear.
>Women are pissed and betrayed that a smart, cold man like him would look towards the "sensitive" autists
Great insight. Women are themselves very manipulative, yet condemn manipulation in others. Making honest feelings do dishonest work is a big part of femininity. I've always wondered about the extent to which women are conscious of this process as it happens. I suspect that most are not. DFW's sentiment in the novel is affected, just like the common sentiment that compels certain men towards their "duty" in the world is affected by certain women. Such women don't like having the mirror turned on them. It's probably because what's staring back at them really is ugly. I hate to sound like a typical anon with mommy issues, but this kind of thing is impossible to ignore.

Start reading, if you dont like it stop. Never understood why people force themselves through books.

I wasnt aware it pissed off women and liberals when I was at uni (granted in scotland late 00s early 10s) this book was pretty in vogue and I was doing a ba in sociology which is pretty lefty.
