The style of writing is superb, the repetition and the imagery perfectly conveys a hazy, subjective and confusing existence. I'd say it far surpasses what Kafka tried to convey in his writing, without the usage of crude metaphors. It is a portrayal of life as an absurd nightmare, or at least an exploration of the thoughts and experiences of a person which believes that - a Child of God.

At the same time the entire book feels full of occult significance, the places and the characters are like lost gods in some mythical realm inaccessible to regular mortals. I'm not talking about any overt references to to the occult, the author instead weaves his own supernatural world, dark and macabre. To just interpret that the main character is high on opium, would reduce the whole book to crude mundanity. If we accept all his experiences as real on some level, the book becomes much more. Reading it seemed to induce in me a delirious, dream-like state, transporting me into some gloomy domain which underpins all of our existence.

>The 1979 ban remained until 1993 when it was allowed to be published if heavily censored. These edits were worse than the ones originally proposed, as they cut not only religious passages, but anything remotely sexual as well.

The two are inexorably linked. Islam is a terror which couldn't possibly have originated in any civilized world, having it's roots in the barbaric, inhospitable desert. The vile, primitive men which reside there, find solace only in such darkness and heresy, knowing no shame or remorse for their actions. Do not believe their insidious lies, which aim to trap and bewilder those pure of heart, ultimately in order to sacrifice them to the unspeakable horrors of the night.
Only the desert could have bred such dark desire for the domination, and the destruction of the whole civilized world, the envious wish for all human achievement to be swallowed up by the black abyss. Just like the desert, Islam encroaches on fertile land, and does not allow for anything to grow.

Just saw this yesterday. Jorjani spends the talk breaking down some of the aspects of the book, particularly the stuff that touches on Iran’s pre-Islamic beliefs.
