Not sure how you are using the word "dire" in this context but the whole thing needs to be read in order and while some books are better than the others, they are all wonderful

Genuine question from a speaker of the Queen's English to an American: Why do you have to destroy the etymology of words?
Wooden boundary = Fence
Erecting a boundary = Fencing
Master builder of boundaries = Fencer
Defending your boundaries = Defence
Violating boundaries = Offence
Contesting boundaries with a sword = Fencing
Master of sword fighting = Fencer
All until America decided one day that some of these will be spelled with an 's', while others will continue to be spelled with a 'c'. Why? What is the payoff for disrupting the development of the language? In spite of being a jumbled mess of French, German, Latin, Norse, and every other European language, the thing that always made English beautiful is that you can see its decent and development within the words. Why do you have to make it ugly?

Dune and God Emperor are very good, the rest are just ok, except for chapterhouse which I thought was pretty bad.
