Is it cheating reading about a book's themes, motifs etc before actually reading it so you know what to look out for

>cheating
It's a hobby not a test
And you still fail at it

I've done this in the past. Honestly, it's a good way to get a deeper understanding of the book while putting a fraction of the time into it. If you're the type of person who treats the canon as a checklist that must be sped through, then this is the style of reading for you. The problems are (1) that you're adopting somebody else's interpretation which may be flawed (but this is probably a good thing if you're as retarded as everybody else on /lit/), and (2) the only way to get a truly deep understanding of a work is to read it and reread it multiple times, your interpretation is still shallow even after receiving assistance through another person's interpretation.

Am I the only one who always sees his index finger as a long skinny tube nose, like a fly?

It can just ruin the experience

Learning about Dosto's Christianity made it hard to bread BK and C&P without noticing the obvious Christian allegories and motifs behind each character
