Is it essential to read edith hamilton's mythology before starting with the greeks?

>edith hamilton's mythology
No. but you should read some myth book, can be any really IE: bullfinch, apollodorus, Hyginus, etc. You just need to know some of the myths and gods so that when homer references them you aren't like "whats a minos?"|

>>14775041
Not exactly essential but it's a good primer. The point of reading Mythology is getting a good grasp on ancient greek gods and myths in order to understand references to them in later works.

She’s fine, I read Graves The Greek Myths and Hesiod. Both good starts.

its easy to read and covers things fairly well imo.

Why not read an actual Greek work, Pseudo-Apollodorus, since it exists and is exactly what you're looking for?

Just read Hesiod

No, it's boring and irrelevant

Why would you read something so boring and pointless?

I read this based off the recommendation of the sticky. It was a good start and covered a lot of different subjects in Greek history/mythology.

>> No.14775345

No. Not at all. Maybe if you want a general overview and a basic bitch, mundane telling of the narratives. The issue is Hamilton is a retarded naturalist. It's the same old modernist shit and misinterpretation that comes out of the """"""enlightenment"""""".
>dude all mythos is just ignorant guesses explaining natural phenomena lmao
>dude anything that can't be explained that way is somehow trying to just tell a story about le humanity and our experiences!!!
>divinity/god/gods are just created by humans
Completely ass backward, narcissistic and ugly. It is an entirely alien outlook, different in entirety from any in a traditional society that is religious. Including the Greeks. Myth is trying to convey near-ineffable revelation handed down from high by the Divine. Its purpose to try remind the eternal soul of the Forms it once knew, and within our half-existence in the material world better align ourselves with god's mould. Morality for the masses, also allegories for the priestly and ruling classes to help society better resemble Eternity (all within a certain potentiality).
The Greeks weren't naturalists. Naturalism emerges when there is no priestly class, or a very poor one. Confusing metaphysical superreality for its shadow is retarded. Yes, lightning is Zeus' material reflection - but He is not the lightning.

Read Plato. Then the "Neo"platonists, the Greeks in general. You also have to ignore the modernist/materialist outlook on all this you'll find in the prelude, written by some twat who hand waves the religion/mysticism inherent in what a saint like the holy Plato was trying to convey. You'll find it confusing that, in one instance, Plato/Socrates is talking about "reason", and then goes on divinely-inspired exegeses as if possessed. It will be strange because when you think of "reason" as a 21st century materialist, all you think of is 2000s dorky atheists. Noetic reason =/= discursive.
Pic related shows the utterly dismal cope of modern academic retards. What you have to understand about philosophy is that it is just another branch of the Western mystery Tradition. It isn't a tweed-wearing cunt just thingken and on a quest for self-aggrandizing novelty of thought (nothing is new). If you are not a theist you aren't interested in philosophy. You can't be a nihilist, atheist, materialist, whatever. Marx wasn't a philosopher. Neechee wasn't. Foucault is a Protagorean sophist, same with virtually almost every other shithead since the fall of Rome. With the exceptions of masters like Eckart, etc. Philosophy is a life delving God's depths. It's an erotic yearning for the true existence that preceded our birth. There was a time when philosophy/science/religion were basically the exact same thing. It's not a seat at the anti-philosophical centers that tarnish the name 'academy'. It's also a life. An ascetic one - undertaken to assimilate one's self with God, and thereby become God.

The problem with reading most modern literature that has anything to do with religion is that it is written by a completely alien mindset that is based in the atheistic cynical ideas that infest the modern academic understanding of religions. Why would you trust someone who thinks all religion is just a silly imaginary fairy tale to explain a religion to you?

even assuming they are right it still doesn't contribute to a proper understanding of religions. The depth of the religion is completely lost especially for ancient polytheistic religions like the greek and celtic religions. That's why most people understand those religions as retarded shit like smite and percy jackson.
