14635144 No.14635144 [Reply] [Original]

Is it worth it to read the KJV just for the prose, even though other translations are more accurate? If so, what kind of corruptions should I look out for? (I'm Catholic btw)

Just get the Douay-Rheims, it's way better than the Kang James, more accurate, and it has that flowery prose you're looking for.

Never knew about that edition and I'm a Catholic as well, I'll check it out.

If you read it in KJV because you like to is a blessing. If its like a very serious study then I'd do the NIV

Douay-Rheims is literally the authoritative English bible. If you have any scholastic and theological interest in the Bible, it should be your go to English translation. If you are only interested in more personal familiarity with scripture, others are fine. The thing to really watch for are the footnotes. Many new Bibles, even ones approved by the Church, contain controversial foot notes. The Douay-Rheims footnotes are solid, and will give you a good sense of more traditional interpretations. The newer the Bible, the more it will turn to more contemporary Biblical analysis, some of which is really not compatible with and Orthodox understanding of the faith.

Douay-Rheims isn't good. It's better than most translations but inferior to the KJV. I've studied Greek and read the Vulgate. Douay-Rheims is a translation of the Vulgate that was heavily adapted to imitate the KJV after the KJV saw huge success in the English-speaking world. The New Testament KJV is incredibly accurate (I don't know Hebrew so I can't speak for the Old Testament), but you'd be okay cross checking with a modern translation like ESV if you don't understand something.

I don't care what denomination you are, the KJV is the authoritative Bible in the English language. The Orthodox Church always recommends it as well. Douay-Rheims is a meme translation that only Catholic larpers on 4chan read. The only use for the Douay-Rheims is to help you understand the Vulgate. Unless you're reading the Vulgate alongside Douay-Rheims then you should read the KJV. Reading a translation of a translation that was then heavily adapted is incredibly stupid for any text. If KJV wasn't superior to Douay-Rheims than Douay-Rheims would never have been modified to read more like the KJV.

isnt Douay rheims based on the same catholic manuscripts as the modern perversions like the niv and esv? I checked a few verses and it reads similar to the niv.

>authoritative English bible
this entire concept is a protestant meme, there will NEVER be an "authoritative" english version. we don't even have any authoritative original texts. the manuscripts vary wildly and our best bet is the vulgate. if you don't know latin, don't even bother "studying" the bible.
