Are Susan Wise Bauer's works on ancient history any good?

They're a very good introduction and easily accessible for a general audience. I really like how she's able to put events that were happening simultaneously in different parts of the world into context with each other.
Just remember that Bauer is a homeschooling advocate and an author, not a historian in the strict sense. The best way to read her books is to use them as a starting point on the path from general works to more specific academic studies and primary sources.
