White-ness as a racial identity was not even a thing at the time of the Greeks so it doesn't make any sense to predicate them with that. Even considering now that the idea of what constitutes "white" is so variable and dependent upon personal opinion (are Arabs white? Slavs? Irish? Southern Italians? Most modern people would say yes to the last 3 but historically speaking, they very often were not grouped together etc.)

Considering they thought other tribes to be barbarians, grouping them in with other people of the same skin tone is also rather odd. There was no idea of racial solidarity in the modern /pol/ sense.

look at the history of race is america. every european group was ALWAYS considered white by legal definition.

the one place where you could say it gets fuzzy was with lebanese and syrian christians, as they were considered white as well (but i think after a court ruling if i recall correctly.) but as i said previously, these are not actually arabs but phonecian descended people who speak arabic.

If you are basing whiteness on skin tone, then the Arab in a place like Syria, Jordan, parts of berber north africa etc. have a better qualification to whiteness than the Italian or Spaniard in many cases. If you are basing it on culture, then you have just admitted that whiteness is a societal category.

"White" is a meaningless term we mostly got from Americans that needed a way to unify all the English, French, Dutch, German, etc immigrants as a single entity and differentiate between that and the blacks, injuns and mexicans.

A better term is simply European which is not subjective, and Greeks are European. That's that. Had the early US settlers simply called themselves European-Americans, there would be no confusion.
