while it may not be a faithful translation, it is a masterpiece in the English language by its own right.

1. Pope
2. Fitzgerald
3. Chapman
4. Dryden
5. Butler

There’s hundreds.
You have to be the judge of that. Go sample some

What are the full politics surrounding the best Iliad translation? I just want to know what the layout is.

Has no one written a run down?

It greatly depends on what you're looking for. What are your metrics?

If you have not read it before just read Fagles. Stop overthinking it. You will read it again...

>You will read it again...
what do you mean?

I mean you will read it again. And again. And again. This is not a novel. You will be drawn into revisiting it every few years and it will change you. There is plenty of time to read other translations.

This. Never understood why people get so hung up on choosing a translation. If what you're reading is of any worth you're going to read it again someday. I like picking a new translation whenever I revisit a work that wasn't written in English.

Does anyone know who's publishing a decent edition of the Pope version?

Something thats well written but also accurate to the source.

Fagles or Verity would do the trick in that case. Sample both and decide.
