what's kinda annoying is how Tolkien (JRR) spent so much time writing and revising the work, putting a GREAT DEAL of thought and planning into his work. It wasn't like he just slapped a story together and let the pieces fall where they may. And Christopher too spent an equal amount of time studying his father's work and compiling it into some organization, noting the evolution of the many stories.

Yea, it's "possible" that something like that could have happened, even though that Tolkien never actually wrote anything like that. Tolkien even said not all people Haradrim or Umbarans were evil, though Sauron was able to get many of them to serve him.

my issue is why they keep insisting on going that route? Why "invent" new stories when there are PLEEEENTY of stories that have already been told by Tolkien and never put to film?

Do you think I consider Jackson's movies a total miss? Because I don't. There is a lot of stuff I love about them, even things that deviates from the source material. It would be pretty dull to literally follow Tolkien word by word, granted, not to mention utterly impossible, but stuff like turning Sauron (who has a physicals form in the books) into a literal search light irks me to no end. Another thing I don't like about the Jackson movies is that it sort of glorifies and spectacularizes war and I consider the battle scenes (especially all of Legolas' ridiculous antics) to be the absolute worst parts of these movies. The books themselves actually has an anti-war and almost pacifist message to it at times. Being a WW1 veteran who watched pretty much all his best friends die at the Somne does that to you I guess. Tolkien knew what war actually was and that there was nothing glorious about it. Jackson really dropped the ball there. Bakshi (who's adaptation is in some ways worse than Jackson's yet in other ways actually better) conveyed Tolkien's own depiction of battle and warfare in the books way better. Much more gritty. Much more organic and down to earth. I know it's still fantasy and all, but still.
And Tolkien's mythology or whatever you want to call it isn't to be considered exclusive to englishmen or catholics. He leaned heavily on the Finnish Kalevala and Norse Edda in crafting his stories.
