Yeah rock is pretty fucking boring. The people I hate the most are ones who think the mountain goats are good when on every level they are awful. I hate basedboys who like bad music sung objectively badly because they relate to the lyrics alone. I agree with you in regards that you can't say that some music is good because theory, since most of the time theory comes after practice. however, different types of music require different types of listening. people are generally accustomed to passively hear pop music, which ain't bad on its own, or to think of music as "poetry with melody" ala Greek. but some forms of music need active hearing and some preparation, i.e you can't listen to a symphony without knowing basic sonata form, you can't listen to jazz without knowing that the richest part is improvising over the tune's melody, and you can't divorce Gregorian chant from its spiritual and functional aesthetic. so yes, there's more to listening jazz than "muh big chords"
