Mishima was great but let's not pretend he was a serious political thinker. He was a dorky gay guy insecure about his masculinity to the point of having a butch leather jacket glamor photoshoot (that reminds me...), and this combined with his insecurities about the changes in his country led him to embrace his own hypermasculine fantasy concept of the previous order of Japanese life. His politics were more theater than anything else and the nationalist student organization he led were supporting cast in a grand play of his. I respect the shit out of him for carrying his LARP through to its grand conclusion and not wimping out, but let's be real.
