14429065 No.14429065 [Reply] [Original]

I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Then Anāthapiṇḍika went to where the wanderers of other persuasions were staying. As he was sitting there, the wanderers said to him, “Tell us, householder, what views does the contemplative Gotama have.” Anāthapiṇḍika thus said "please let the venerable wanderers expound with his position, and then it won’t be difficult for me to expound to you what views the contemplative Gotama has.”

When this had been said, one of the wanderers said to Anāthapiṇḍika the householder, “The self exists, is eternal and equal to Brahman. Only this is true; anything otherwise is worthless. This is the sort of view I have.” When this had been said, Anāthapiṇḍika the householder said to the wanderer, “As for the venerable one who says, ‘The self exist, is eternal and equal to Brahman' his view arises from his own inappropriate attention or in dependence on the words of another. Now this view has been brought into being, is fabricated, willed, dependently originated. Whatever has been brought into being, is fabricated, willed, dependently originated: That is inconstant. Whatever is inconstant is stress. This venerable one thus adheres to that very stress, submits himself to that very stress. Whatever is stress is not me, is not what I am, is not my self. This is the sort of view contemplative Gotama has".

When this was said, the wanderers fell silent, abashed, sitting with their shoulders drooping, their heads down, brooding, at a loss for words. Anāthapiṇḍika the householder, perceiving that the wanderers were retroactively refuted, got up and went to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said “Well done, householder. Well done. That is how you should periodically & righteously refute those foolish men.”

Isn't that the same as saying you can't ever learn something from anyone (it would be dependent on their words)?

This is just an unfalsifiable claim offered without any logical basis on which it could be established or even supported i.e. not a real argument. The other guy could have responded with "well your view is brought into being also" and then the debate would have been at a deadlock. I know this is made up but at least try harder

The point of the sutra was that the Buddha had no views. That’s why he didn’t answer directly and arrived at a ‘view of no view’ by demonstrating the futility of fabricated views. Answering your way would’ve made that person a laughing stock instead of a deadlock.

claiming to have to views while teaching an elaborate metaphysical scheme involcing karma and rebirth while also accusing people of having wrong views and while doing a bunch of moralizing is hypocritical and is a fabricated view which has been brought into being

All things eventually reach enlightenment though (even the "wrong" ones) so it's not really moralizing.

>As he attends inappropriately in this way, one of six kinds of view arises in him: The view I have a self arises in him as true & established, or the view I have no self... or the view It is precisely by means of self that I perceive self... or the view It is precisely by means of self that I perceive not-self... or the view It is precisely by means of not-self that I perceive self arises in him as true & established, or else he has a view like this: This very self of mine — the knower that is sensitive here & there to the ripening of good & bad actions — is the self of mine that is constant, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, and will endure as long as eternity. This is called a thicket of views, a wilderness of views, a contortion of views, a writhing of views, a fetter of views. Bound by a fetter of views, the uninstructed run-of-the-mill person is not freed from birth, aging, & death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair. He is not freed, I tell you, from suffering & stress.

>A 'position,' Vaccha, is something that a Tathagata has done away with. What a Tathagata sees is this: 'Such is form, such its origination, such its disappearance; such is feeling, such its origination, such its disappearance; such is perception...such are fabrications...such is consciousness, such its origination, such its disappearance.' Because of this, I say, a Tathagata — with the ending, fading away, cessation, renunciation, & relinquishment of all construings, all excogitations, all I-making & mine-making & obsessions with conceit — is, through lack of clinging/sustenance, released.
