Thoughts on E.T.A. Hoffmann?

Tales of Hoffmann is based on his stories, right? I like the doll's aria.

Yeah, he's pretty important in the musical world, but I never really hear anybody talk about his own literature.

I read the Sandman for a German class. Probably the best book we read in the class, but my German is shit so it was very hard.
I felt like it contextualized Kafka a bit for me. Germans with their uncanny kind of horror. You even see a little bit of that in Goethe.

Reading the into/biographical material of a collection, I think I shall enjoy it much.
Can’t find a pdf of Tomcat Murr anywhere.

I've read Das Fräulein von Scuderi for a presentation I did for my German class maybe two years ago but I don't remember anything at all about it.
Wasn't particularly outstanding or bad is what that means, I suppose.

I began reading Tomcat Murr a few days ago, and it is fun. Liking the Murr excerpts better than the Kreisler ones so far.

What’s the story behind this?

Just read Freud reading the Hoff, it's more fun.

No, screw you. I won't.

Read it just a couple weeks ago. I liked the form a lot - even more in retrospect, especially how the Kreisler biography is chopped and mixed up. The way the Murr story is told is very charming and pretty funny and humorous as a caricature of a Bildungsroman. What a pitty that he didn't finish the third part.

Highly based, Sandman is great

I had to read "der goldene Topf" in school; it was pretty good. Can his other works hold up to it?

Just saw the kantbot thread didn't you?
