i think its important to not deny the fact that 4chan has a long history of being the progenitor and popularizer of memes.
but the ephemeral nature of threads and the lack of a systematic hierarchy of organizing content via something other than "bump" (further exacerbated by the decentralized nature of Anonymous) means that other sites, such as reddit or instagram, will have a far greater influence on the proliferation of "hot/trendy" memes
