Do you take notes while you read?

No, because I'm not a retard.

For detailed non-fiction, extensively.
For fiction, close to never unless the characters are extremely difficult to keep track of.
Why did you ask?

Absolutely. You should be annotating every single time. In fact, the line between reading and writing is meaningless. Any decent reader vandalizes his books with thousands and thousands of annotations.

>> No.14215620

No. What should I be writing down? What’s the point?

>> No.14216448

Actually really enjoy taking paragraph by paragraph notes on stuff. It takes a long time but after a few years it's crazy how much you'll have down and how intimately you can remember it. Notes are always good as long as you are actually thinking about the material and making something transformative instead of copying (the quoting and indexing has its use too)

Can you give me advice on how to take notes of a book?

>> No.14216981

I underline a bit. If I really like a section I'll draw a circle on the corner of the page so it's easier to find later

This might sound stupid but try to know why you're taking note of something. Very easy to lapse into mindlessness out of laziness

I write notes to correlate with certain books if im having a hard time comprehending a complex structure or encountering words I don't understand. Defining them then writiing it down with context helps a lot with improving my vocabulary.
In the instance of Infinite Jest, I thought it was appropriate.

underline then revisit when Im done the book.

No. No I don’t defile my books. Sometimes there’s passages that really pull at my heart strings, but I usually just try to remember them and they usually stay with me.

For non-fiction i write a summary of every chapter after finishing it. Fiction i just read and enjoy

I annotate every text I read, fiction or not. I even annotate the introductions and whatnot. It helps me think critically about what I’m reading, so that I actually learn something instead of merely leave entertained. This is not a complicated process, just some underlining and a few dashes next to lines worth taking note of. Pic related is an example of what I mean, although it’s just a scholarly article.

Doesn’t it turn into just one more thing to carry around? To say nothing of a set of journals... having to organize them seems rough, and tracking the exact line-by-line notes also seems difficult.

I take minimal notes in a dedicated journal from which I synthesize short essays. Marginalia and underlining/highlighting has been scientifically proven to be ineffective in aiding in retention.

I annotate then I use those colored sticky tabs with a color coding system so I can reference a book quickly. I often want to cite things directly rather than give the gist so it's useful for me to have it directly on hand, and easy to find in a span of time that isn't conversation interrupting. It's also an excuse to read to people, which I enjoy very much.

Pic related before the color coding system, just used colors until they ran out.

Not necessarily, but I keep a notebook where I write anything relevant that comes up to my mind at any moment. So if I have a particularly interesting insight, or something in the book I'm reading touches me in a special way, it's possible that I'll write something in this notebook. But aside from that, I just read

God look at those lips. I bet she leaves black marks on any glass she drinks out of. When you look into the garbage can at the front of the class, you can tell which Starbucks cup is hers. Imagine getting your cock slobbered by that mouth
>shlrrrrp slurp gargle guuhhhhhhh sqrrrrrrrrpft
her slobber running the paint off her lips and permanently staining your glans black
Yeah, I'm gonna coom

>> No.14219481

I used to write words or very short sentences next to passages I like, about what I liked or what they made me think of. Very minimal.
Since I've gotten a Kobo I just highlighted passages. I like books, but I like being able to read in the shade more.
