So I'm new here and as a musician I've been trying to get started with writing lyrics and I realized if I don't actually dedicate time to reading the quality of my writing will suffer. I'm interested in poetry recommendations, but I'll consider reading anything you guys deem significant. I know it's not a requirement to write lyrics that are deep but I just want to do what I can to prevent myself from writing songs that are banal and nihilistic.

i think that lyrics come from your soul and more or less are based on your experience. read books and poems that you immediately light upon (whether you come across them in a physical setting because the name or cover looks interesting to you, or in a virtual setting, for largely the same reasons). these works will be significant to you more than anything recommended by other people, because they will have been a product of your own discovery and instinctive taste. also listen to more good lyricists - spoken/sung word can be very different than words intended to be read. use words that sound natural to you, not ones that you think should be used because you want to sound all deep and shit. also, you can be lighthearted without falling into banality
that being said, here's some stuff i like

lyrics don't really matter, you can become sucessful with garbage or repetitive lyrics easily, just look at iron maiden for example, if the music is good lyrics don't matter, and how you sing them matters more than what they are
