How come art, sculpture and music all went to shit in modernism yet literature arguably hit its peak?

It's simple - your taste in other art is too basic. What happened in modernist literature was equivalent to what happened to other arts, and it makes little sense to say that the same set of ideas influencing literature is legitimate, but when it turns to painting it's suddenly wrong.
