Can any of you /lit/ people identify the book that Mayor Pete Buttigieg is reading in this picture. I know he's quite the intellectual and has refined tastes when it comes to literature and philsophy so I'm most curious to know what book it is that he is reading?

Can any of you people that are /lit/ identify that book, and if so how is it?

I think actual true believer Communists are almost as batshit as alt-righters, but luckily they haven't gotten a foothold in politics yet. The deal is that America is politically skewed so far right that there has effectively been no left wing for decades. We're finally getting a few politicians with sensible leftwing policies though. Buttegieg has meaningful connections to a specific brand of Marxism that would encourage such behavior. I would contend that anyone who's ever dealt with Gramsci or Althusser in an academic setting has, whether they know it or not, become a Marxist sleeper agent. To have been raised by one of these academics pretty much guarantees it. Even if it was never done explicitly, Gramscian tendencies were like transmitted subconsciously to him.

This is a predictable and uniquely Americanized take, complete with accusations of bigotry and everything. It actually shines light on just how narrow and shallow the left wing American worldview is.

Let me point out a few things. Yes, it may be true that the American right wing tends to take a more racialist, religious, and/or capitalist view than the American left. This hardly makes it ideologically left wing. It’s actually only right wing relative to the American left along with today’s Western Europe, which one would have concede has largely been influenced by Americanism at least, Communism at most. Historically this wasn’t the case.

Further, the founding myth of America is centered around democracy and liberalism, both of which are, by definition, non-hierarchal left wing ideologies. From a historical perspective America never has been right wing and those that go on and on about the current Administration resembling something like Hitler’s National Socialism or Mussolini’s Fascism simply don’t know what they’re talking about. Is the American right racialist? Yes. Is it capitalist? Yes. Is it truly right wing? No. It’s fundamentally democratic and liberal. It’s just a different flavor of liberal than what you like.

It’s this extremely narrow worldview and limited set of reference points that leads leftists to hurl accusations at anyone they deem to be more to the right than they are as fascist, not really having any idea of what fascism actually is let alone what is right wing.

I didn't say that America was fascist. Obviously there have been right wing political regimes far worse than anything America has done. The point is that the right wing in America has been driving further in the direction of fascism for a long time, restricting voting rights and gerrymandering, and also restricting reproductive rights, attempting to halt marriage rights, etc. The current GOP is stonewalling constitutionally instituted processes in an attempt to keep their guy in power. Yeah, we do not need an intrinsically submissive head of state who is mentally ill. There is a reason the word "gay" means "fucked up and undesirable", too. Although introduced (in some weird Sapir-Warf inspired attempt at mind control) to somehow change people's attitude toward homosexuality (as if it was the WORD that caused the attitude rather than homosexuality itself), the word was quickly and organically redefined through usage by the people, based on their direct and unfiltered lived experiences with homosexuals.

Because white nationalism is fucking stupid. I'm not going to even open that can of worms.
>taxes
above certain income levels I'm fine with a 100% tax. Not sure what your're trying to say here
>not enough money
I do not believe certain parts of the US government have enough funding, no.
>already happening
and could be improved with more taxes on the wealthy
>passes on costs
corporations and CEOs are hoarding massive amounts of wealth. They have enough to pay their taxes without increasing the costs of goods. If they do pass those costs on there are other companies who are willing to undercut them
>precisely my point
well then do we agree that corporations ought to pay their fair share?
>lgbt issues
this seems like intentional ignorance. I'm not going to keep harping on this. If you want to stay brainwashed, nothing I can say will stop you. I would advise you to get off /pol/ or 4chan or whatever /pol/ analogues you frequent and look for some other sources of news. Not everything mainstream is bad, only certain sections.

tu quoque, man. But even if all the news stories I've read about Trump are misrepresenting him, I can still tell from the things he himself has said on camera and twitter etc. that he's a sack of shit.

How? If you have two couples in your neighborhood one hetero couple where the man fucks the woman in the ass, and a lesbian couple that eats out her girlfriend and both are monogamous, how does that affect you?

Sodomy is anything outside of penal/vaginal activity, so that includes anything oral or in the ass, gay or straight.

how does that affect you other than remind you that you're not getting any and that women out there would rather be with other women than have your chode of a dick shoved up them?

Why do you care?
>They have enough to pay their taxes without increasing the costs of goods.
They're still going to increase their costs though
>If they do pass those costs on there are other companies who are willing to undercut them
Who will also be paying more in taxes and increasing profits. Who is going to undercut amazon btw?
>corporations and CEOs are hoarding massive amounts of wealth. They have enough to pay their taxes without increasing the costs of goods. If they do pass those costs on there are other companies who are willing to undercut them

I agree, it's really pathetic to watch you insist you're earlier empty statement has any weight while continuing to provide ZERO (0) examples

>why do you care?
because I'm opposed to unchecked greed and because that wealth could be put to much better use elsewhere.
>Increase their costs
The main issue with all of this is income inequality. If income was more evenly distributed across the population, people could afford to pay more for goods which could cancel out any issue of price hikes

Well I've already seen you claim that Trump called white nationalists "very fine people" when he very clearly meant that there were normal people who wanted to keep the statue and normal people who wanted to remove it. My point is that rabid Trump hatred is largely unfounded and many liberals are entirely unaware of how media gas lighting shapes their reality

Their disordered use of the sexual faculties is rooted is hedonism, and they are willing to sacrifice disease and bodily damage to satisfy a perverse inclination which arose from someone else's bad example and their monkey-see-monkey-do mirror neurons. Their disordered use will manifests external faults. Aquinas writes that such wretches are blinded. Blinded to the harm that is done to them; and to others around them. The net effect a heterosexual man and woman has of practicing anal sex, will reap societal consequences, and if they scandalously advertise it, it sets a bad example for others around them. It is affecting me, because these people are dedicated to a career of sin (for lack of a better term, I don't believe in God), where they bring down not only themselves but others around them.

>No sin has greater power over the soul than the one of cursed sodomy, which was always detested by all those who lived according to God's law. ... Such passion for untenable practices borders on madness. This vice disturbs the intellect, unbalances an elevated and generous state of soul, drags lofty thoughts down to base ones, makes men pusillanimous and irascible, obstinate and hardened, servilely soft and incapable of anything. Furthermore, the will, agitated by the insatiable drive for pleasure, no longer follows reason but rather the tumult of the passions. ... One who lives practicing the vice of sodomy will suffer more pain in Hell than anyone else, because this the worst sin that exists.

the highest tax rate under Eisenhower was 90%. I'll reiterate that I'm talking about marginal tax rates. I'm not going to keep banging my head against the wall by addressing your misdirection and "but why" questions. That's some 4th grade bullshit. If you don't understand why income inequality is an issue, then do some research.
