You don't need a reason to not commit suicide. Not committing suicide is something that just happens automatically. You're going to spend the rest of your life not committing suicide without even having to try, most likely.

What you really need is a reason TO commit suicide.

I find philosophers often get their questions ass backwards in the above manner, and it leads to lots of pointless grandstanding about irrelevant bullshit. Who cares how shit life is? It's going to keep happening to you regardless.

>"well then i should kill myself because life sucks"
Okay. Off you go.

Oh look. You're still here. Guess you didn't really believe that after all.

Hence my point: you're not asking this question because you want an answer, you're asking it because you want attention - this isn't a question, it's an implicit threat attempting to hold me emotionally hostage. Like most philosophy it's just narcissism.

Hey, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe you do kill yourself. I can hope.

I actually agree with this. I used to read philosophy all the time and ruminate on life's questions to the point of despair then realized all philosophy really did was make me go through a very round about way back to square one.

I was always just living my life an enjoying it and that seems to be what philosophy leads you back to no matter what, it tells you to just live and not over think life until you can't function because these questions are basically beyond our comprehension and the best thing to do is just live your life.

Its like I had to intellectualize something that used to just come naturally to me. Did help me with being more aware of myself though.

>See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;
>In that I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.
>But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them;
>I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it.
>I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
>That thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

I realize that the primordial schism between Catholics and reading makes this reply pointless but "choosing life" in this context has little to do with suicide. The second excerpt is quite ironic since suicide is very congruent with it, almost commands it if you think about it. If "I am not my own" and my body is a loan from God, then what better way to truly immanentize it, "me not being my own", and to pay by debt than suicide?

If you truly wanted to commit suicide you would have no problem slicing your wrists or jumping off a rooftop right now. After all you want to end this suffering as quickly as possible, right?
If you take long hours thinking about it or are always on the verge of doing it but never do, then you don't want to commit suicide, you still love your life and cling on it. What instead happens is that you love FANTASIZING an ideal form of death where all the pain stops and there is finally a bitter tranquility. But truly, you know that that's not how death is, death in reality is cold, and heavy, and disgusting, and fucking terrifying. And deep down you know that, and you know that life is better than the complete obliteration that death is and that there are chances that your life will improve. And you live everyday subconsciously hoping it might get better. If you truly had lost all hope and had legitimately no reason to live anymore, you would have pulled the trigger already.
So please, stop debating with yourself whether you want to commit suicide or not; there is nothing to debate, you obviously still have the hope and drive required to keep on living.

They don't have to. The idea is ridiculous. If you were impelled to live by reason you wouldn't need philosophy because you'd know the answer already, and since philosophy is appealing to your reason, it cannot defeat the will to live that keeps you alive.

>> No.14034240

There are two ways you could answer that question: you could say "yes," or that there is just no good reason to believe it. The only philosophical arguments against suicide are philosophical arguments because "life is valuable" and since nobody ever thought they'd have all their life's worth in this instant, it's hard to see any good reason to kill yourself.

To make your life even worse, this is the type of argument that people who don't believe in suicide would make.

There is no compelling reason to give up a life worth living. There is no compelling reason to take on the risk of making something terrible happen to yourself.

So there's no justification for anything to the extent that people have gone in and done it.

So if you are reading this, I hope that's enough for you to not commit suicide because then I have no reason to kill myself after reading this post.

This is not your first reincarnation, nor your last.
If you were to kill yourself you would simply return to life with the added baggage of a life hardship not surpassed. The experience that you accumulate now will be instinct to you in the next life.

You're still free to end your life, and do the same in the next one. However others will continue on with their life and learn valuable lessons, while you would be left behind.
