I want to find some books to read at work, but I don’t want to just go from a list off the first page of google suggesting the same 100 books everyone reads. I want to read something worthwhile.

Any genre or topic is okay.

All The Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy. It's really good so far, I'm about 40 pages in. If you like that read blood meridian

Usually the books "everyone reads" have some merit (especially if you ignore anything written after 1950 or so). If you're worried about a book being "pretentious" you already failed, read what interests you, regardless of what other people might think.

I dunno, maybe this. It is a book about the JQ from the Jewish side, very interesting! There are always two sides to a story after all! It is in the public domain and avaikable online for free.

What are you interested in reading about?

Your questions is too vague, there are books about every subject so consider your interests and read something pertaining to that.

Pick up Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. I also recommend Wolf in White Van by John Darnielle and American Gods by Neil Gaiman. They're all easy, non-pretentious reads

The Song of Roland.

It speaks about human flaws and he consequences, even tho loyality and bravery have been invested, the ego stil might win and destroy everything.
