hello, I thought I'd make a philosophy general just to get some basic discussion going on. feel free to discuss anything as long as it's related to philosophy such as what you are reading at the moment, your thoughts on it, asking for recommendations on a specific topic, discussing particular ideas, asking for beginner help

recently i've been reading a biography on kierkegaard; it's quite long, around 900 pages, but very detailed. it seems like more than any other philosopher i've read, kierkegaard writes his work half in blood and half in ink. the way his life has influenced his work is interesting, but I've also really enjoyed reading about his little quirks. for example, when ever he had coffee with his secretary, he would make his secretary pick out a mug for him, but not satisfied just with this, he would also ask his secretary for a reason on why he picked that particular mug. he would then proceed to fill that mug up right to the brim with sugar (not exaggerating at all) to go with his coffee. even other little quirks like the fact that he always wrote while standing up are quite interesting to me, it breathes a lot of life into his works

Here is a short and sweet philosophy paper I would like to share with you all. Does ethics need God? Hope someone enjoys it.

Theology is not philosophy. Especially theology based on made-up feelings as starting points.

Rationalists do not own philosophy, you mongoloid.

Who does anon?

Are the philosophers themselves, or maybe everyone who has a working brain does?

Nobody owns philosophy. It's about as broad of a field as one can conceive of, in which there are countless methodological approaches you could take and starting points to proceed from. Some counter-rationalist philosophers are all-time greats. Stop being such a shallow person.

No wonder he wrote Fear and Trembling.

Idk where to start with philosophy.

Pretty pointless to make a thread on this board since its full of kiddies who think Nietzsche is the greatest thinker

Show me how Guenon used the philosophical reasoning to reach some conclusion then. How he doubted something, set it as a question and solved it by dialectical arguments.

That's not enough to make someone a philosopher. Otherwise market analysts and pundits would be philosophers as well. To be a philosopher proper, one must create or adapt a view of reality from first-principles, starting from an ontology, moving to a metaphysics and then an epistemology and finally an ethical system. And even depending on how convincingly he does this, he could still be categorized as a mere sophist.

You're never gonna make it, bro.

Why should one have to work through your particular method? Who gave you the authority to lay out the authoritative structure of the discipline of philosophy?
