I liked the Mitchell translation the best despite its anachronistic language warheads stacked outside the city walls WTF.

I've gone back and read other translations but they made more sense after reading Mitchell's version

The Addis/Lombardo translation is great because it retains the conciseness of the original. Most of the other translations feel bloated.

I am reading through it right now, the Herbert Allen Giles translation. Can't tell if the parables are deeper than the teachings of the tao te ching, if it is a bad translation or if I am just too dumb to extract the meaning of them

There is no definitive translation because written Chinese is inherently vague. It's why the Chinks write great poetry and terrible instruction manuals.
