you don't write poetry, read tons of poetry and just seek for it.

first read a bunch of rhyming poetry and write rhyming poetry.
second, read a lot of non-rhyming poetry.
third, go back to rhyming poetry.

Not Anon, but I think I know what he is saying. You don`t really "write" poetry in the same conscious way you can write a novel or a play for example. Poetry is something that, done well, comes from the deepest cracks of you. I myself just grab a pencil and start writing while paying no attention to the paper or the actual contents of what I am writing. I just let the poetry itself be written in some sort of way, then I check it for the occasional misspeling error, but nothing more. As Anon said, read different poets to get how they did their art and then just try to do it yourself. Poetry is not the same for everybody

Anyone who makes something from the heart is doing poetry. Now good poetry, that requires you to be honest with yourself. My personal advice is that you should be very critical of yourself so that you can be the only judge. I find any poetry with others in mind or appeals to a tradition as reasons for its possible appeal to be cowardly. I want to read something true, I don’t care for anything else except that you find it beautiful and that you love it. Poems like that fly off the page.
