my medication hasn't changed. If anything, I suspect it's because therapy has absolved me of responsibility. Now it's not my fault I'm not writing, I don't have time to write, and it's my therapist's job to get me writing again. the fact that he's advising me to take a break is only making matters worse

Does anyone remember the name of that one fantasy novel where the protagonist is a prince and his papa sends him of to some ranch to do that whole "practical experience" routine? Had a magic system based off of yin-yang and the protagonist was considered a pretty cool dude for having a high aptitude for both. Later on he does his cool "everyone, look at much of a great and well round leader I am" schtick during some war.

I believe BRANDON SANDERSON has a foot fetish. My reason for believing this is because I have a foot fetish so I pick up on things most humans do not. Take for instance the ever shitty House of Cards. Now, I do not like this show (House of Cards) but I did sit through 4 seasons of that crap hoping it would get better, and in that time I noticed numerous examples of blatant foot fan service. It is a good fetish to pander to because it occupies a gray area due to the lack of nudity, which is why its perfect for a guy like BRANDON SANDERSON. Reading Mistborn, I can't help but notice how many times we are reminded of Vin's cute bare footedness. She's barefoot on the roof, toes clutching the edge. She's barefoot on cobblestone, only to walk on marble. Vin walked to his bed BAREFOOT, making no sound. Of course the obvious explanation (for the mundane majority of men) is that Vin is a Mistborn -- a thief -- and strives to remain quiet. She has to make lots of sacrifices due to the magneto magic of BRANDON SANDERSON'S world, such as never wearing toe rings or anklets (unless they are wooden or something) but I do not believe this is the sole reason for the foot prose on display in these books. The author (BRANDON SANDERSON) has fueled my spirit with his depiction of Vin. I have a hard time getting through the pages when I keep seeing examples of her beautiful foot-based dexterity, yet its these very passages that push me further on. I see visions of Vin toying with Elend, giving her man a royal footjob that any king would crave with her expertly trained toes. I think about Vin embarrassed, painting her toe nails to match her dress while Zane watches from the window. I think about her wearing glass slippers to show off her new feminine toes at the balls! Oh what a sight to behold! I am not even on the third book so I can't begin to imagine how much footy goodness is still to come. Anyway, these are my reasons for suspecting BRANDON SANDERSON has a foot fetish.

About time the celestial storyline starts bleeding into the main story so that's a good development. Northstrider is a fun wizard hobo.
I dunno about the tournament though.
Especially the first challenge against the course could have been cut imo. Nothing new and zero tension. Only 1vs1 fights would have been a little but stale but the fortnite island section already spiced things up a little.
Team battle with the Akura dudes would have been interesting too but we never got that.
Not bad and since it won't take forever for the next book to come out I'm not too disappointed.

>Did you enjoy the collection?
Kinda. Its hard to pinpoint why I did not enjoy it more actually. I like short stories, I liked his ideas and I did not find the writing bad.
>What was your favourite story? Least favourite?
Favorite: Story of Your Life. Honorable mention to Tower of Babylon, the only other story where I really enjoyed the writing.
Least: Hell Is the Absence of God, which mostly read as a buildup to the irony of our hero going to hell anyway. I guess you could read some commentary on the randomness and unfairness of life into it but I mostly found it pointless.
>Do you like the short story format when it comes to SF&F? Why/why not?
Yes. It forces an author to get to the point, which can be quite challenging. I'm also a huge fan of short story collections as they let you sample and author. A good example is The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories and Other Stories by Wolfe that contain most of his typical themes and techniques.
>In Story of Your Life the author deals with determinism and language giving you such an understanding that it alters your interaction with space and time. Just like in the previous books we read, Babel-17. Who wrote it best?
I did not really like either. Delany did not spend enough time on the language part while Chiang made it to outrageous. Story of Your Life felt more like an wacky idea than commentary on how language shapes our perception.
>Regarding Liking What You See: A Documentary, would you get calli? Or would you, considering you're probably an ugly neckbeard, support enforcing it to level the playing field?
I would enforce it on 4chan because it would eliminate thot posting.
>Any other thoughts?
If we're comparing stories in the book to other stories (like Story of Your Life to Babel-17) one must mention Flowers for Algernon, which basically does what Understand does but better. Hell, I nominate Flowers for Algernon as next months reading.

Lightbringer is fairly solid until the back 4th of the 3rd book and all of the 4th book where every other chapter Weeks decided to drop some BOMBSHELL bullshit twist that makes no sense given the rest of the story that's already been told.
Here's a list off the top of my head:
Grinwoody being the leader of the Order
Ironfist being a member of the Order
Dazen killed Gavin on the battle of Sundered Rock, essentially making any chapter showing Gavin in prison during the first two books irrelevant and completely inside of Dazens head
Andross being Kips actual father
No one knowing Andross was a wight despite it being painfully obvious
Andross no longer being a wight and actually being one of the principle good guys, completely changing his attitude and personality in a matter of chapters
Andross knowing about Dazen taking place of Gavin all along
Grinwoody being the leader of the Order

Probably about a dozen I'm forgetting, too. That last book was just fucking awful. First three are solid though.

I just finished The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood (which I was gifted, so no one have to get upset). It was actually quite bad. I guess it is criticism against the American prison system? It's actually quite unclear. Ted Chiang is a hack and despite being an academic and self proclaimed math lover he does not know that zero times infinity is NOT equal zero. I didn't discuss it much around here because there wasn't much to discuss. The book was completely underwhelming. If I were feeling generous, I'd say it was half a book. I guess the only thing that happened was the fight of the prisoner and between Lindon and Yerin. But the prisoner's fight was really just a setup for the fight with the stepharano-girl.

I think this was the worst book yet. At least ghostwater had the fight between lindon and the akura.

There was no development with sister, murderess yandere didn't show up to avenge her late master, northstrider was left to the next book, as was the tournament, nothing happened with the dreadgods and there was no sexy vampires with a love triangle.

I honestly don't think so. It had potential, but it was spent on just sitting around. He killed the skysworn lady before we even got to know anything about her. Some good points, but overall pretty bland. I liked book 2 and 3 and even 6 more than ghostwater.

What I read today.
All of these are short. Longest was ~20 pages, most were much shorter.
You may be thinking, "Why read so many you didn't like?".
I was going through what I had categorized as short, based on the automated word count, and since it was so short I figured I may as well read it all.

Liked
A Season of Broken Dolls - Caitlin R. Kiernan
I generally dislike epistolary works, in this case journal entries, but this worked well enough, despite some minor annoyances of style.
In 2027, A journalist with a messy relationship in a post-nuclear attack New York City is covering an art exhibit, though this exhibit isn't your standard sort. The walls are made of pulsating pig flesh and all the art is literal body art. The more grotesque it is, the truer and more evocative the art.

The Dry Spell - James P. Blaylock
Blaylock, was among various others, mentored by Philip K. Dick
This particular story is "fabulism", which basically means "literary fiction with some fantasy".
It was nice story. Man defies the weather report and nature itself to some comical effect.

Watchcrab - Neal Asher
A fine little futuristic police story.

No Need of Wings - Tia V. Travis

Missives from a Possible Future #1: Alternate History Search Results - John Scalzi
I didn't like it when I watched it in LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS, but I since saw I had it in my calibre library, I thought I'd take a look. Still didn't like it.
It's about various alternate histories and when and how Hitler could have died and what that would have resulted it in.

Pluto Tells All - John Scalzi
This was dumb. Really dumb.

The Devil's Mailbox - Naomi Kritzer
A story of the slush pile, except for souls.

Eating Crow - Neal Barret Jr.
This attempted to be funny, but I didn't find it so.

Deliah and the Space Rigger - Robert A. Heinlein and Jack Seaman
This is a teleplay/screenplay. I don't think they make for good reading, but it was there and it was short.

Unrequited Love - Gene Wolfe
A story of a robot child with a robot dog and a human girl with a human dog and the protagonist has them swap dogs. Hilarity does not ensue.

Catch'Em in the Act - Terry Bisson
Guy buys a video camera. Turns out it causes people to commit crimes when they are being recorded.

Joe R. Lansdale
Dragon Chili: From the Grand Church Cookbook
After reading this, I had look at a few others to see if they were similar. If you happen to read this sometime, tell me of what you think of the "twist".

I felt like it was to much. It became a keikaku caricature. I feel like Chiang have a tendency to go to the extreme to express his ideas. Story of Your Life is similar to Understand in that a human consciousness is radically altered, and in the same way he goes overboard and makes Louise see the future. I actually liked it better in Story of Your Life because knowing the future kinda is the logical conclusion of Louise's new concurrent thinking. And also because it lets the story talk about free will and determinism.

>>What was your favourite story? Least favourite?
Story of Your Life. Not sure about least favourite.
>>Do you like the short story format when it comes to SF&F? Why/why not?
Yes, probably one of the best genres for it (alongside horror). Gives authors a chance to flex ideas without needing to worry about characters and themes over the course of a novel - though they should still take more care than they do, and writing a truly brilliant short story is in some ways more difficult. Chiang is one writer that probably heavily benefits from this.
>>In Story of Your Life the author deals with determinism and language giving you such an understanding that it alters your interaction with space and time. Just like in the previous books we read, Babel-17. Who wrote it best?
I preferred the writing of Babel-17, but Story of Your Life was a good exploration of similar themes.

Question for people who read shitty webnovels. If I were to write a shitty webnovel, how often would I need to update it to get a following? I have an outline I like, but haven't decided whether or not I have it in me to finish a novel nobody will buy. If not, I might just say fuck it and do a webnovel and see if people will read it that way. But the only one I've read is Worm, and that was after it was done - I've got no idea how you're supposed to handle actually keeping one running.

>>Did you enjoy the collection?
Yes, very much.
>>What was your favourite story? Least favourite?
"Tower" as my favourite and "Division by zero" as the least favourite. Actually, I think Division made almost zero sense.

>>Do you like the short story format when it comes to SF&F? Why/why not?
Yes. As someone mentioned: it forces the author to go to the point. Also, short stories are a good place to experiment with ideas, which can be expanded if needed.

>>In Story of Your Life the author deals with determinism and language giving you such an understanding that it alters your interaction with space and time. Just like in the previous books we read, Babel-17. Who wrote it best?
I just began with Babel-17.

>>Regarding Liking What You See: A Documentary, would you get calli? Or would you, considering you're probably an ugly neckbeard, support enforcing it to level the playing field?
No. People should just be smarter when analysing a message. Also, the claim about old women been screened by younger ones, although being truth, misses the point about fertility. Beauty and health go hand in hand.

Yes, what was the shape of the earth in the Tower -world? A Moebius strip, maybe?

What is Malazan trying to achieve with fantasy? It's setting feels so disjointed, almost like all of the events and motives are randomly attributed. The setting has very, very little character. At Least that is what I gleaned from reading the first book.

>> No.13920445

>>13920310
The scale of events in Malazan is enormous, the shape of the overall story and course of events is too big to grasp from reading one book, or even 3 books. I've often described Malazan Book of the Fallen as a jigsaw puzzle where you don't know what the final picture is supposed to be at the outset. You won't get all the answers to everything you read about in one book. If you were expecting a quick read where you understand everything in one book, you should drop the series now, because you won't understand anything for several more books. You've got a lot of puzzle to fill in before the broader picture starts to become clear and seemingly unconnected events start to connect and make sense.

I will say again: the scale is enormous and you absolutely cannot be expected to understand the shape of the plot after reading the first book. If your appetite hasn't been wet then I'd suggest dropping it. If you are exhausted with trying to keep up with the characters and places, then I have bad news for you: you've met maybe a fifth of the important characters and the entire content you're on is the second least important one in the entire story, out of the 4 total we see. You're going to jump to entirely new lands with entirely new characters several times, and it's going to be books before these characters ever meet and interact with others.

So yeah, if you just want something quick and easy where one book = one story, might as well move on. Malazan requires a lot of investment and unless you're super invested in figuring out the world and piecing together the story like a puzzle, you're just going to have a bad time.

Yeah that's kind of a recurring thing in Malazan. Often you'll have these ancient monsters that are supposed to so terrible and powerful and they get anticlimactically mogged by sapper mines or something. The first book does kinda take the rug out from under you by making him the centerpiece of the book's narrative, but others later on are less central to the plot of their books. There's seemingly no shortage of hoary monsters from millennia past in Malazan's world though, world is practically littered with ancient forgotten tombs and burial grounds.

What I read today.
All of these were relatively short, with the shortest being ~20 pages and the longest being ~37 pages.

Liked
Fire in the Lake - Chris Roberson
An alternate history murder mystery set in The Forbidden City of ancient Imperial China.

The Ascendant - Ted Kosmatka
I didn't like this at first, but by the time I finished it, I found myself wishing it were a novel.
Concept summary: Snowpiercer, but in a "tower", the setting is somewhat unclear. I could use other examples, but that'll suffice.
Two young boys from some of the lowest inhabited levels dream of making it to the top.

?
TVA Baby - Terry Bisson
This was a surreal story and I don't know what to make of it.
Summary: PKD writing a sociopathic random guy acting like an action hero parody.
The version I read had some content changes from the original, due to reader complaints about a certain something in the story.
I looked at the original as well.
I wonder how often a writer changes a story when republishing it. Probably not often, or maybe I'm entirely wrong.
Spoilers: It's unclear if any of this is real and the guy is in a severe state of psychosis or if it's not real and it's more like a narration of some work of media the protagonist is experiencing. Could also be a straight telling, but that'd be a bad choice. Probably the first choice.
Full spoiler: In the ending, the protagonist may or may not escape by going into a TV, I haven't played Persona 4, but I know it involves going into TVs as well and they were released in the same year. So there's the slighest of chances that may be related, but that seems doubtful considering the author's age.

Didn't Like

Grail-Diving in Shangrilla with the World's Last Mime - Ken Scholes
This was ridicolous in a bad way. A crossdressing reverend, two nuns, a French Mime, a retired amateur wrestler, and some kid are traveling in an RV across the wasteland that is the United States which is infested with hobgoblins because of aliens to find The Holy Grail.

Show of Hands - David Prill
Hand obsession, fetish, and phobia all-in-one with a "twist" ending of zombies (?) .

Livia Llewellyn - The Four Hundred Thousand.
The War needs soldiers. Your 400,000 egg follicles have all been drafted.

The Pile - Michael Bishop
Under The Honey - Liz Williams

Anxious about quality? Remember that shitty writing can be fixed in editing. Nonexistent writing can't. Also, keep in mind that most books people praise as classics are complete and utter garbage, and most popular fiction is trashy as hell.

Anxious about the pointlessness of it all? remember that you can either have a slim chance to achieve your dreams, or a small chance, and recall that even if a book fails to sell, a good sequel's a second opportunity, and most writers have to try more than once to succeed

>Actually, I think Division made almost zero sense
Do you remember why you thought this? Of course the main character is extremely autistic but math is in extension used to describe basically everything and it would be very strange and concerning if some part of that description was suddenly proved to be false. If, as example, airplanes working was just a fluke and not science, why should we trust the next great invention?

>How large is infinity and how small is zero here?
>how large is infinity
The simplest proof I'm able to come up with is taking two functions, x and 1/x, and let x approach infinity. One function will approach zero and the other infinity. Multiply them with each other and solve the limit, the result will approach 1. You could get other results showing that the behaviour of zero times infinity is not easily defined.

As with these polls and all future polls, you'll have to decide for yourself how accurate they are. Feel free to continue voting on any past polls.

This will be in the next OP.

>Between Science Fiction and Fantasy, which is your preference?
Looks like Fantasy has won out for now. 31 votes.

>Is horror relevant to /sffg/?
No is winning out. It's unclear if the 45 votes show an actively contested opinion with supporters on both sides or simply two people ballot stuffing their preferred option.

Next Week's Theme
Cities, as LGBT was disqualified for blatant vote rigging early on.
Next time will be at the end of the week.

I'm going to sleep soon, so I'll either make the next thread soon, or I'll just leave it as it and let it archive and if someone else wants to make it they can. Thoughts on this? Doesn't matter to me either way as I can just link a post to the OP with whatever.

Seems won't have the Monthly Reading nomination vote in the next OP, but that's just how it is.
