13908555 No.13908555 [Reply] [Original]

Which Catholic philosopher or theologian had the most impenetrably complex ideas? Like, who's the Hegel of Catholic philosophy and theology?

>> No.13908568

>>13908555
Aquinas. He's also the main citation for lots of things.

>>13908555
Paul

Hegel is an obscurantist, not really a complex philosopher..

How would you know if you haven't put the time into reading/understanding him?

>> No.13908738

The theologian/philosopher Jean-Luc Marion incorporates modern Continental philosophy into his work and from reviews is hard to read, I haven't personally read him so not sure

Why waste your time on an obscurantist

Christianity is meek.
It says forgive your enemies, it says turn the other cheek, it says do not cast the the first stone.
Nietzche was right in that sense.
But the Christianity of the middle ages wasn't meek.
They persecuted heathens and punished sluts.
It was more barbaric, but it made more sense.

This. Aristotle's metaphysics is required reading if you want to understand Catholic theology.

No. Buddhists are nihilistic materialists and buddha larpers do not belong in the church.

Definitely not. Noosphere is here and it is used for porn.

Of course barbarism made sense to you, you're a slack jawed 21st century coombrain.

>>13908734
This is true.

>>13908570
While a good recommendation Paul is not really complex. It is worth looking into his syncretizing influence on Christianity though.

>> No.13908857

There are none, thinking was mostly done by Jews and idiosyncratic heretics like Descartes up until the reformation.

why should I forgive those who trespass against me?
Why should I turn the other cheek?

I highly recommend Lectures on Divine Humanity by Solovyov. He was Russian Orthodox, possibly a heretical gnostic sophiologist, and converted to Catholicism toward the end of his life. The book is extremely Hegelian and beautiful.

because you are living the philosopher's life, and you strive to live by an ideal of the good exemplified in Jesus, who preached mercy. because a good man is defined by merciful and just action, because justice and mercy participate in the form of the good the same way that beauty does, and it is what makes them beautiful. and beauty is the point of living isn't it.

Old Testament justice is different from what you were quoting, which came from Jesus. The same Jesus who made a new covenant in the New Testament.

I guess so, but OP mentioned he is after Catholic thinkers.

Aquinas is perfectly understandable and straight forward.
I am afraid that Catholic philosophers, since the deal in truth an not wordgames, never reached the level of upfuckedness of Hegel, Kant, Deleuze etc.

Meister Eckart a buddhist? Have you held your farts so long they invaded your brain?

Nonsense. God is on the cross, enthroned in heaven, in the person of the Father, and present with us in the Holy Spirit.

>What do you think "turn the other cheek" even means?
Well if you want me to be specific Jesus said when somebody slapped you you were supposed to turn the other cheek so they could slap you in the other cheek.
I mean yeah I get it, it might be confusing to the person slapping you that you'd do that.
But it makes more sense to just slap them back.
