Hey everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that The Lit Quarterly: Winter 2020 edition is underway. I've so far received roughly 6-7 poems, 7-8 short stories, 4 essays, 2 pieces of art work, and 1 letter to the editor. This is a good amount of content to complete the quarterly.
The point of this thread is to solicit feedback and suggestions for this edition. For those who received a version of the first edition, it was very straight-forward and basic as far as formatting, structure, etc. What kind of things do you think will improve the quarterly without vastly increasing printing costs? Send suggestions and feedback to litquarterly@gmail.com.

If you have writing you'd like to submit, I can't promise it will make the winter edition, but the way things are going, there WILL BE a spring edition as well, so don't hesitate to contribute.

Now, the bad news: for the first edition, accepted short stories received $200CAD and poems received $150CAD. In order to keep this thing going for the time being, I've had to reduce the payments to contributors. I apologize for this, but I think in the long run, this will help the quarterly last much longer.
The pay scheme for accepted submissions is as follows:
Poem: $75CAD
Flash fiction: $100CAD
Short story: $150 CAD
Essay: $150CAD

Either way, I would love to hear from you if you want to help improve the quarterly. I'm still overseas (Portsmouth, UK atm) editing submissions, including my own.

Friendly reminder of the vision and conditions of this project:
>independently funded (with help from donations from anons...thank-you so much for everyone who donated!)
>not for profit
>designed to compel aspiring writers to create, revise, edit, and refine their writing by completing projects for a specific purpose
>submissions must be original and previously unpublished

Nice to see you're still doing this. I'm working on a short story that I might want to submit, but at this rate it won't be done until spring.
Is there a PDF available of the first edition of the journal? Are you still planning on publishing the winter 2020 edition on amazon? Will it be print only or will there be a digital edition as well? Are there any plans for a website, or are you going to continue doing everything through /lit/?
It's great that you've put this all together, the excerpts of the first edition I read were pretty good and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

Thanks, man! Email litquarterly@gmail.com for a PDF to download.
Right now, I'm attempting to acquire an ISBN for the second edition which, I hope, is the last hurdle to clear to distribute the quarterly via amazon. That process is still underway. The way I envision it, I'll print 100-150 hard copies of the next edition and provide an amazon link for people who want to order it. But I'll also have a PDF copy from the formatter to simply email to people who want it.

As it stands, I'm not sure I am capable of setting up and maintaining a website for the quarterly, though I know basically EVERY publication has that now...it's something in the back of my mind that I think is inevitable, but I'm not in any hurry to make it happen, though I've been led to believe that it's not as difficult or expensive as I think, so we'll see.

I didn't even know submissions were going for winter but it looks like you've got plenty and I haven't started anything. I suppose I'll start something for it and shoot for the spring edition.
>>13899682
Sounds great to have it available via Amazon.

>> No.13899776

thanks for doing this OP. sounds interesting. is there a word limit on the entries though?

>> No.13899788

>>13899769
Crossing my fingers, hoping I can figure it out to make it more accessible. As for your submissions, work on it, revise it, but whenever you have something, do hesitate to send it my way for feedback, even if you think it's not ready.
>>13899776
Poetry, I'm trying to keep them to a page or less, which obviously is a wide range for word count depending on the format. But 15-30 lines is about what I've been receiving, some shorter, some longer.
Short stories: my own entry in the first edition was the longest at 5700 words, which was even a bit too long in my opinion, so that's about the upper limit.

lol, as opposed to what? What kind of NON-LITERARY essays might one submit that aren't about politics, history, and social causes? Are you guys philosophy fags, then? By all means, submit philosophy essays, but I haven't read philosophy in a decade and will be a poor editor/critic of it...

Funny you ask...I have a wonderful submission that details the devolution of anonymous online forums and how they're basically forcing officials to impose regulation and law on the many unique realms of the internet because of the IRL actions of some of their users...we're currently having a back and forth about how best to present it without...breaking the rules.
>>13900304
I kind of wanted to, but I realized that everything was better and safer without any formal or clearly recognizable connection to this website, especially since I'm not a real company or organization. After all, Lit is just short for literature...and that is all I have to say.
>>13900307
I think there's room for philosophy in the quarterly, but I am ill-equipped to edit academic philosophy...tying it to a political or social cause grounds it in layman's terms, eh?

I haven't contacted the cover designer yet. He's more talented at photography than design, but I was very happy with the first-edition cover...thoughts?

>> No.13900377

>>13900360
As long as the cover has the same dimensions and a colour that fits then I wouldn't mind if you got a different designer. I do like the design of the first one though.

>> No.13900381

>>13900377
I want to keep the same designer, but the cover he made is actually out of his element, so I may have to convince him to continue a similar theme. I think 6X9 is manageable, but keep in mind that it was a very thin volume and they JUST fit into the 6x9 bubblewrap envelopes. The second edition will be thicker, so I'll have to upgrade to a large envelope.

the cover is cool, i don't have the print edition though.

I know that I have no say in this whatsoever but the same cover with a different color this time would be aesthetically great desu. Purple instead of green, exodus instead of genesis, whatever, just a suggestion. Keep up the good work anon.

The cover design is nothing revolutionary, but aesthetic, and swapping the colors within a similar palette could be pretty dope, while keeping effort to a minimum
