OMFG. Once I got through my fiction backlog, from the 1980s or older, it is like everyone's fiction writing took the worst nose dive as possible. What the fucking hell is going on? This is the worst year I've ever had trying to find something remotely, "good," to read in any fiction genre.

I'm not sure I really understand your post OP, are you saying you ran out of good books written before 1980? Because we happen to have a whole board dedicated to recomending those if you like.

I'm saying characters seem to be written as though they are mouth breathing retards, yet they somehow have credentials in their universe. I mean, haven't you ever noticed that a supposedly smart character does a lot of stupid things or gets through via plot forcing instead of on his own merit? I guess it all comes down to the fact that you can't write a character smarter than you are.

No, I don't want recommendations. I'm just giving up on fiction.

I think your problem may be that you simply choose stupid books

All fiction is stupid to placate and indoctrinate the masses.
All non-fiction is strictly propaganda.

Smart people don't due stupid things. Stupid people do stupid things. That is how you define a smart person or a stupid person. You are confusing an intelligent person with a smart person because you are ill-informed and/or once ignorant.

Smart people do stupid things for smart reasons. They don't have complete data, they failed to foreseen an unlikely outcome, they were lied to, etc. Smart people and characters aren't all-knowing. They can still be tricked, deceived, and fooled into a wrong line of thinking, only to discover too late that they've been outsmarted.

What does "smart" mean to you?
